My 9800 Pro finally exploded on me. Here are some screens of the wonderous display of colors and shapes I'm getting.

So I guess I have no choice but to buy a new graphics card as I don't see how I can stand doing anything with this much longer. Just had a couple questions to anyone that would like to inform me a bit better.

I was wondering if I should go with a PCI, PCI express, or AGP card? I was looking at the geforce 7xxx series, and though older, they seem to be pretty good deals for the price. I'm not looking for anything top of the line atm, just something thats cost effective. Any other suggestions for bang for your buck graphics cards would be greatly appreciated. Till then I'll just keep researching.

Thanks,
fr0

Did you try a driver re-install? Different cable (check for bent/missing pins?)

1. Un-install the driver from Control Panel.
2. Boot into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner Pro 1.5 (a free download)
3. Remove everything ATI
4. Reboot and install new driver (may want to try different or older versions since the card is a bit old)

Worth a shot at the very least....

Yeah, currently I would need an AGP card, but I'm just thinking about getting a new Mobo and CPU as well. Just replacing the video card could be a viable option as well. But will the Asus A7N8X Deluxe support the 7600GS. You know if it would LW07? Thanks, for the info.

Mucker, I have tried a couple of those, but not all of them. I'll have to try the others out. Thanks for the information.

A 7600GS will work in an A7N8X Deluxe.

What is your budget?

I could do like ~$125-~$200. Video cards advance to fast for me to keep up with buying the high end ones.

Yeah, wasted a whole can of air on it yesterday and took it out and reseated it twice. Even removing the drivers it was still doing it. I'm pretty sure it's fried.

You probably won't be able to get a new CPU and Mobo with that budget.

I would get this X1650XT AGP for $179.99 plus shipping with that budget, though.

It performs about the same as a 7600GT.

Oh, I thought you just meant video card, I don't want to spend tons, maybe 400 at the most. I know AMD has some cheap cpu's right now like athlon 64 3400+ venice or orleans for like 55 dollars and newegg.

So I was looking to spend between 300ish no more than 400

I would recommend this BIOSTAR TForce 6100 AM2 for $74.99 plus shipping.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103033
Socket AM2 Athlon 64 3500+ for $89.00 plus shipping.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820134045
1GB stick of Kingston DDR2 667 ram. $92.99 plus shipping.

And get this 7600GT for $119.99 plus shipping.

Total: About $385.21 with UPS 3-day shipping.

It must be DDR2 unless you're willing to go with Socket 939, but S939 is being discontinued, so you won't have an upgrade path as far as CPUs and Ram is concerned.

My trusty old 9700pro started up acting up a few months ago. I thought it was a driver/card problem but it turned out it was just the fan crapping out and dying, causing the GPU to overheat and subsequently crash/artifact. Looked at some replacement fans and decided it wasn't worth it to shell out any more money on it.

I bought an interim card instead to hold me over until I was ready to build a new system (recently finished, specs in sig) and settled on a BFG GeForce 6800GS OC. Pretty nice card, other options at the time were the 7600GS, 7800GS (too pricey though), and the 7600GT. I kinda wish I bought the Leadtek 7600GT, but oh well.

The above options are still viable, and the 7800GS has dropped in price and can be had for $200 or less (with rebates). If you're looking to really extend the life of your current rig however, there's the X1950s in AGP that just came out recently, but they'll run you $250-300.

RIP to a great video card, my 9700pro will always be one of my favorites.

Yeah, the fan dying was a pretty common thing for the 9700 pro, I think.

I bought one when the first came out; it was my first 'uber' card. After a few months it crapped out. It turns out the fan had died and it melted. RMA got me a 9800 pro. This has been years. I ono, what? 4 or 5?

yeah the fan's were pretty crap in the 9700 series cards, I managed to keep both of my Gigabyte 9700 Pro alive by removing the fan every 3 months cleaning them right out and spraying around the bearing with WD40 to clean any crap out....it keeps nice and quiet for 3 months or even some times longer, I've had both of my 9700 pro since late 2002 (September) and they have never missed a beat.

Good to know emilyek. I only run one Liteon dvdrw/cdrw and only 2 case fans. Maybe I should be on the safe side and look into one. Thanks.

that's why I'm pretty anal when it comes to keeping the fans working on my 9700 Pro's, I paid AU$680 for each one and both proved nearly 4 years worth of solid reliable gaming before they were upgraded....now the serve in my file servers....I doubt they will ever be put out of service as long as they keep working.

Awesome video card the Gigabyte 9700 pro is....
