No one expected him to become an investigator. All he had to do was call the police. Instead, he allowed boys to continue getting raped.

If I am in a position of authority and a man comes to me and says "hey... so I just walked in on Sandusky raping a 10 year old boy in the shower room" it is my responsibility as a good human being to make sure something is done about it. Not just pass the ball. But to tell the authorities. There is absolutely, positively no excuse for not telling the police. This crime is no different than murder or rape of a woman. In fact it may be worse than the latter. Point is, its about as heinous a crime as there is. This isn't the type of thing where you say "eh, I'll tell someone and then forget about it" meanwhile still working along side Sandusky.

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. This fucking shit. Did you hear Paterno today? Fucking leading a cheer of "Penn State" outside his house? That dude is a role model. He needs to come out of his house and say "listen, college kids. I appreciate the support, but you know who really needs the support, all the little boys that were raped. This isn't a situation where you need to come to my defense, instead focus your efforts on letting society know we will not tolerate this treatment to our children". Instead he leads a chant of Penn State. Fucking sickening.
 
so, lets say JoePa did go up to Sandusky/his friend and ask "so, uh, i hear you are raping little kids in the shower...whats the deal with that?" do you serious think Sandusky would have replied "yah, the shit is awesome, you should try it"

JoePa did about all he could do other than fire a guy on heresy ... i'm not a Big45Ten fan, but JoePa was a good coach...shame they wouldn't let him at least finish the season out
 
I recall students rioting (and the riot police having to come in and do some serious crowd control) after Penn State beat Michigan. I'm not surprised at all.

Is that what the witness told Paterno? Does anyone except McCleary (or whatever his name) and Paterno know what was said between them? The witch hunt is pretty amazing... granted I'd probably guess Paterno was culpable, but the evidence really isn't out there, unlike the Grand Jury results that implicate Sandusky.

He didn't need to confront Sandusky. He needed to make a call to the police. Him being a coach, a good coach or fucking jesus doesn't matter. He failed to protect children. He knew horrible things were being done and he did NOTHING to stop it. He needed to call the police. This and only this. He didn't do that and that's on him.

If a high school student went to the principal and reported that he saw a teacher (or assistant principal) with his penis in the ass of a 10 year old, and that principal downplayed it and didn't do everything in their power to address the problem, people would be looking for that principal's head on a platter. The main difference here is that he's a successful football coach. Like so many others in sports, you're looking to give Paterno a free pass.

From what I understand, a graduate assistant caught Sandusky in the act in 2002 and he went and told Paterno what he saw. Paterno probably had other knowledge prior to this, but at this point we know he had knowledge of what was going on. At this point he had to tell the authorities. He didn't. If someone walked in on my co-worker murdering someone and they told me about it, it would be my responsibility to tell the police. I can't just tell my boss and let him sweep it under the rug. I have to tell the police. If I don't, I'm in the wrong. This is absolutely no different.

OK so he didn't call the police, an obvious oversight on his part. But he did report this to his superiors? Then why is he being singled out... well more so than anyone else? Why didn't the guy who brought this to his attention call the police, why didn't his superiors do it? Why must it be him and only him who had to have made that call?

He's being singled out because he was the single most powerful man on that campus. He isn't the only one that should be held responsible though. Absolutely every single person that had knowledge of this incident and didn't report it to the police need to lose their jobs. Every single one of them. Starting with Paterno and the Athletic Director.

Paterno says he didn't know the full extent of it in a very short statement, that the graduate assistant never told him what was stated in the grand jury testimony. something about we were all fooled. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. It very well could be and wouldn't surprise me, but to what extent was Paterno in the know of the exact details?

Also, I think we often overlook teh fact that people will overlook the flaws of those that they love. Like women being abused who still love their husbands, or in many other cases we want to believe in teh best of our closest friends and give them the benefit of the doubt, and I imagine that it's what happened here. I'm not sure how close sandusky and paterno were, but if they were like family, then I can almost see how it all happened, even if it's just so disappointing and terrible that it did.

Lastly, I think the reason paterno is leading cheers of penn state is that the university has come under so much fire from the national media and just about everyone. That's why he probably wanted to retire at season's end, so he could finish it out with the football players that he recruited and coached up, not just for himself. Or so I hope.
