Well if anyone has one of these, I can tell you that the firmware is upgradable to whatever the sp-100 can be upgraded to. All you have to do is download the SP-100 firmware, then use a hex editor to edit the first line of the .HEX file and change the name SP-100 to SP-90 and follow that with two "null" symbols (hex value is "00"). THen change the name of the file to SP-90.hex and there you go. Just thought I would share that with you. I just did that on my SP-90 and it's running the 2.10 version. Note, this will void your warranty (i think)

I tried as you said on my SP-90 but the device just read "no disc" when i powered it up with the firmware burned cd. Could you tell me more specifically what program you used to burn the hex file or even send me the file itself so I can compare. My hex file read IMP-100 in the 1st line instead of SP-100. Did yours ?

Hey sorry, yeah it was IMP-100, so you change it to SP-90oo. The 'o's are null signs (hex value 00). I used a TDK cd and it read it fine, I used the integrated burning program on XP.I can send you my file, it works. If you want I can take a picture of the rio when it loads. Just PM me with your email and I'll gladly send you the file

edit: Here's a pic

All I have to say is AWESOME !

Thanks. That did the trick. I was so bummed when I thought I had the player that wasn't firmware upgradable. I even thought of buying one of the more expensive ones and just taking the loss on this one. Now I don't have to .

Thanks again.

Awesome it worked for me..

I wonder how long more till Rio finds out about this hack and patch it up with the next release of Sp-100 firmware.

Oh well...

Time to flash those SP-90's!

<< if you change SP-100 to SP-90, and then add 2 null chracters, that means one byte is being overwritten (removed one byte, then added two). I'm no rocket scientist, but that doesn't sound good. >>

True... but if it was IMP-100 changed to SP-90, and then add 2 null characters, it wouldn't overwrite any bytes - since you're getting rid of one each of a number and a letter.

Once you upgrade the SP-90, it becomes for all intents and purposes a SP-100 without a backlight. Future firmware upgrades do not need to be hacked, just use "as-is"

Doesn't matter, the SP-90 IS a sp-100 with a different color case and the Backlight removed. I also wouldn't worry cause I doubt there will be anymore firmware upgrades. There was only 1 after the sp-250 came out, and now that the Slim-x is out I would imagine they won't even think about the 100

I too bought mine as a open box special.

It was the best money ever spent though.

To update the firmware on the RioVolt, please do the following:
1) Download the file riovolt_210-firmware.exe (for PC users) or
riovolt_210-firmware.hqx (for Mac users) from our website. Run this file,
and note the location that the files were extracted to (for PC users, the
default location will be c:\riovolt)

2) Copy the file IMP-100.HEX to the root of a CD (not to a subfolder on the
CD; often, the location will be D:\IMP-100.HEX). Refer to the documentation
that came with your CD burner software for further assistance. This file must
be exactly IMP-100.HEX on the CD; any changes in the file name will result in
it not being read properly by the player.

3) Insert this CD into the RioVolt, and power up the unit. We recommend
plugging the unit into an electrical outlet before flashing. If the
flashing process is interrupted for any reason due to lack of power to
the unit, the RioVolt will no longer function properly. After a few
seconds, you should see "upgrade" on the display, and the unit will power
down. Remove the CD from the RioVolt.

4) The firmware is now upgraded.

NOTE: Do not copy other files to this CD, and attempt to use it in the
RioVolt. The unit will attempt to flash the firmware when it detects
this firmware file at the root level of the CD.
