To be expected, after the dismal failure of the 7in Playbook. Can't spread their dwindling resources too thin.

what is wrong with RIMM? Can't they do more than 1 thing at a time?

Don't know if I'd call it a failure. We still don't have good sales data and if nothing else it's at least shipped more units than almost any other tablet. If success is measured by outselling the iPad, I think that most tablets are going to be considered failures.

what a stupid joke they are. they thought they would try to tie their tablets to their phones in order to sell outdated, buggy phones, but predictably it just made no one buy their tablets. at my local bb and office depot they dont even plug the demos in and no one even notices.

even if they come out with a qnx phone it will fail, there isnt enough room in the market for more that 2 or 3 platforms, and by the time the ironed out all the bugs it will be too late for them

that linked article says they are planning a new phone with a 1.2 ghz single core chip, with specs like that it should be a real hit...

Hmm, it was actually decently successful.

Anyway, this is a good decision by RIM. They need to get QNX on a phone sooner rather than later.

Sounds un-stupid.

Their phones cost almost as much as their tablets and one of them moves millions of units, the other "up to" (for now?) maybe a million per year.

PB is a pretty slick device, but RIM needs a compelling product in the 'phone' space; it looks like the hardware will be fine starting in the fall, but until they are running a new OS, they aren't going to win back any consumers.

New BB bold looks pretty fantastic to me, but I'm still a BB user with a #1 requirement of 'it must have a good keyboard'. The fall lineup won't compete with iPhone as far as available applications.

RIM is economically on its butt as a viable business.

Uh... no.

They just finally realized in a serious way that four years out of date is too much.

It's crunch time for them, but they aren't dead yet, and money isn't really the issue; atm, they still have money.

That might be a bit of an understatement...

RIM is likely 6-8 months from launching handsets that are capable of hanging with the newcomers in the consumer space, and beating them (on balance of features) in the corporate space.

Currently they still have the revenue stream to support this development.

It is, however, looking like a one-shot deal. If they cock up the QNX launch, or let the timing slip much, they may end up too far gone.

As a budding PlayBook developer I'm happy to hear this. Lets me plan for only one screen resolution/size instead of two.

The 7" Playbook is great already. It'll only get better. The QNX phones do need to come soon and I'm glad they're sorting out their priorities.
