RIM death watch

I found this article to be quite an eye-opener: http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/13/rims-...l-of-the-company-that-made-smartphones-smart/

Here's a quote: “BlackBerry smartphones will never have cameras because the No. 1 customer of ours is the U.S. government,” Mike Lazaridis would say in meetings. “There will never be a BlackBerry with an MP3 player or camera.”

Ouch.

And with Android on Playbook being postponed, I don't think there's much wind in their sails...
I'm just trying to figure out what's more stupid; Posting a quote from 2003 or applying said quote to the situation today.

Stock is back up over 9% today. Of course everyone is up today, just like everyone was down the other day.

Sprint canceled it's plans to sell the Playbook. Says a lot when you consider Sprint doesn't have the iPad and they're still rejecting the Playbook on their network.

Stock is up another 10% today. Apparently investors think Google's Motorola deal means good things for RIM? Intriguing.

More likely is that they think RIM is an acquisition target.

What the hell is RIM worth right now?

Google paid $12 billion for Motorola. Thought RIM was worth $15 billion, or was it $25 billion? Bah, if Google bought Motorola, Microsoft paid Nokia "hush money" (felt like using it), and Apple is all set, who the hell is left to buy RIM?

If I knew the answer to that I probably would have bought some stock myself. 😛

My only guess is HP. They may decide to make a move after their failed(?) attempt with WebOS.

No way they abandon WebOS this quickly - the Pre3 is really their best chance to jumpstart the brand.

Only folks I can think of that might buy RIM would be a private equity company or a Chinese company.

Microsoft and Apple won't be interested, to that narrows down the field quite a bit.

Aha, RIM currently has a market cap of $12.7 billion Canadian or $12.9 Americano.

Tack on a premium and it should be less than $20 billion. Cisco maybe? But Cisco just started getting rid (done yet?) of their consumer product line.
