RIM has an uphill battle. With more and more companies cutting costs, they are less likely to buy phones for associates and pay for BES licensing. In the consumer market, their products are way behind and after the Storm, I don't mind if their doors close.

Every move in the mobile space these days seems to be at the expense of RIM. Both iOS and Android are growing at the expense of the old guard: RIM and Symbian.

Good is a horrible container application. You have to have the container open to see contacts/phone numbers + name when you receive a call. In addition a seperate PIN. Oh yeah, 30-50$ a user... :thumbsdown:

Huh. I just looked up RIM's market cap and it's "only" $29 Billion. I thought it was higher. That should be buyable by someone huge or mergeable.
 
We are still a blackberry shop however there is alot of pressure from the business to move into Ios based devices as they just find them far more user intuitive (and I can't blame them).

The good about BB is BES in the corporate environment, the thought of loading Itunes on all the systems for updates is somewhat suspect to me...ideally I would love to see us look at Driod phones but it really will come down to what fits in best with what the business needs.

I do know that our model of central management and distribution of mobile devices is a bit archaic, most companies have a list of units that are supported and the employees buy them and bill back the associated costs.

I don't think the iPad at its current form factor is truly portable. I made good use of one when I went away on holiday over Christmas break and that was fine because I had a backpack to put it in - but it's not something easily carried onto a bus or subway. It's also relatively heavy.

A really powerful 7" tablet that's also light and easy to hold could make serious inroads in the market. RIM has more brand name recognition and lustre than HTC or Samsung, so they might be able to get more people talking and buying than those two.

You must not have used Exchange 2010. It's ActiveSync Autodiscover is wonderfully simple. Plug in email address and password, and it configures the rest for you. Can't be any simpler than that.

That said, I believe RIM's major downfall in the enterprise market is their requirement that you use BES. BES is a piece of shit middleware that needlessly complicates things. It's buggy as all hell and doesn't work half the time. And, until the most recent version, was heinously expensive. They made a large step forward when they made the latest version free for up to 2000 users. However, unless in the next version of their software they offer native ActiveSync support, I seriously doubt that many people will be considering them.

Our customers are dropping Blackberry in droves because of issues with BES. In the more tech-savvy places (or the places that listen to our recommendations), they're getting Androids. In the places that knee-jerk or don't listen to our recommendations, they're getting iPhones. We only have a couple places with WM phones anymore. I just hope that Google fixes the ActiveSync Autodiscover in their next version of Android.

Also, I believe that RIM pricing their tablet at the same level as the iPad is a bad idea. Apple products command a premium because of the image associated with Apple. Despite that, it's bound to be an inferior product anyway. And they're incredibly late to the game. I see it flopping, for the most part.

The biggest problem is that it's a 7" tablet priced the same as a 10" tablet. I'm more "tech-saavy" than most non-nerds (I bow to the rest of you nerds though), and I don't know/ understand/ give a shit about what's under the hood in these tablets. My guess would be that the same holds true for most tablet-buyers who just want something like the iPad. They'll see these tiny 7" things, look at the 10" Apple, and ask why they're paying the same for less.

As for carrying the thing around. If you can carry a notebook or a 8.5"x11" pad around, you can get use to a 10" screen. I laughed when I saw a Samsung Tab commercial with a guy putting a 7" tablet into his suit-jacket pocket. Way too heavy and bulky, not to mention uncomfortable.

I was a Crackberry addict for many years, and I finally gave up on them early this year and bought a WinPhone7. I can't believe how much better this phone is than anything RIM every produced.

I sold all my RIM stock (lost about $1/share x 400 shares) and re-invested in something that actually has the potential of making me some money.
 
My Curve is the best phone I have ever owned imo, and I have owned every kind of smartphone from WebOS to IOS and android

We only have a few hundred RIM devices...we're slowly moving over to iphone4's now, so I think RIM should worry, they should have started to worry 2-3 years ago.
 
Once I was exposed to BES. I knew they were in for trouble. It just didnt add up. From an end user perspective there was nothing special about a blackberry other smart phones couldnt do. From an administrator, the costs didnt justify any of their features. It also added another layer of complexity into the infrastructure. And one more point of failure. Yes, one day the blackberry network took a shit and no email was delivered to our end users.

Actually Bettman needs a good kick in the ass for the shit he pulled. Phoenix still is in huge trouble and Ballsillie's offer was way more than any of the offers they are currently looking at. Bettman wants to keep a team in Phoenix because "it's an important TV market" but the tv ratings there suggest that 4000 people watch the games. Hell, the attendance alone in Hamilton or Winnipeg would have been more than the attendance in Phoenix plus the entire Phoenix tv market.

The new Monaco/Monza pictures look pretty decent. The 2012 rumours of a hybrid QNX/6.1 OS 7 sound good, as does RIM's intention of coming out with "superphones" in addition to "smartphones".
 
In my opinion the Playbook look really slick and it has a lot of potential to compete with Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle. But the price is just not competitive enough to attract the general consumers with this type of economy.

Was referring more to the Nashville situation in which he began preselling tickets for a non-existent team and other shady dealings.

-The fact that the PlayBook won't have native email / contact management w/o tethering at launch is unforgivable for many consumers. They are basically alienating the existing and prospective iPad and Honeycomb market out of the gate.
-if handheld virtualization takes off RIM is in for a DST-unaware-college-douche-bag-at-the-front-desk-who-called-an-hour-late wakeup call. Sensitive bare metal-managed data required strict hardware safeguards back in the day but once the disconnect is made and secure data portability becomes a reality on handhelds, their 'policy server' will no longer be the center of attention that it is now.
