Right click desktop icon

Win XP, SP1 with 512 MB ram and P4 2.23 MH cpu

Up to a week ago, I was always able to right click on any desktop icon and see a menu which, among other options, includes the 'properties' option.
However, now that no longer works unless I do it on the extreme left of the desktop.
I just get a few clicks like the monitor resolution is changing and no menu appears.
This also happens when I right click in Explorer on the right panel when I want to delete a file. However, in Explorer, after the clicks, the menu will usually finally show.

I changed out the mouse and also stopped loading the mouse software, but that didn't change anything. I also tried in Safe Mode, but it still will not let me see a menu.

I wonder if because the left icons are not 'shortcuts' and the others are, maybe that has something to do with it.

Hopefully, someone will help solve this annoying problem.

Thanks,

Len

I would point the finger first at a spyware or virus; do you have up-to-date utilities to scan for both?

I've seen that as an option in some tweaking utilities.....(TweakNow Powerpack 2006 I think). There is an option to disable the right-click menu. This means there is a registry setting for this.....

Thanks for your replys.

I do have Ad-Aware, anti-virus etc. and they are reporting nothing new.

I also installed Tweak and I thought maybe that did start my problem, but I can no longer find the option. I've looked at them all, I think, and can't find anything.

If you are familiar with Tweak or know where I can find the correct 'Tweak', I would certainly appreciate knowing what it is.

I also installed FRESH UI which does some of the same things, but can't find it there either.

Thanks for your help.

some malware puts active desktop to a blank page in html (hard to explain) and disables right clicking. go into your control panel > display settings and make sure the wallpaper isnt set to some html page. also, set it to none and they try.

Nothing worked, so far. My wallpaper is fine and Tweak doesn't say Powerpack.

I tried to 'paste' an image of my Tweak UI screen but it will not paste.

I don't know what to try next.

Hopefully, someone else will know and advise.

Thank you very much for your indulgance.

I downloaded and installed the Tweak program and ran it.
I checked the appropriate options, .... RESTRICTIONS and found that the option to 'hide' was already unchecked. Anyway, I cheched it hoping that later I would uncheck it and my problem would be solved. But, when I checked it, the monitor flicking , etc. disappeared and, of course, no context menu was available. Then, after unchecking, my system was back to NOT working again. I get the monitor flashing a few times and back to the desktop with no menu. And, I rebooted after each change.

So that suggestion did not work. I also 'removed' all my other software that did Windows tweakes and nothing helped. I still have the problem.

Any other suggestions would be very welcomed.

Thanks,

Len

Well look.....simply removing most of those tweaking programs, does not restore your registry settings to default. You need to manually undo the changes you made, before you uninstall the utility.

I have seen a few that will do that for you during an uninstall....but very few.

I think I see a format in your future......

Still have NOT found a solution.
Someone out there must know enough about Win XP to solve this problem.
I certainly would appreciate their assistance.

Thanks,
