Rigging a laptop in a car

I'm going to get a GPS system to hook up to my laptop. Its a good idea although there is one thing I haven't quite figured out. How do I keep the laptop from flying off the passanger seat if I make a sudden stop?

I've seen some mounts but I don't really want to throw another 200-400 bucks into this setup.

Any suggestions?

I have leather bucket seats in my car. My laptop has rubber feet on it. I've tested this by slamming on my brakes while going downhill rather quickly. My laptop didn't even budge. 🙂

Powerful magnets. About $15 for 2 from Walmart. Carton shows a person suspended in mid-air by it.

That should be enuf to hold a little laptop in place.

Yes! Rare earth Ferrite magnets FTW! Those things will have no problem holding your laptop in place. (I assume no responsibility for anyone stupid enough to actually try this)

You know, I'd be better off letting physics work its magic at 80 miles per hour then slam on my breaks with no restraining system or inertia dampeners in place.

Would the magnets have any adverse affects on your HD or screen?

the HD, yes, though you have to have a really powerful magnet right next to a modern HDD to destroy it.

As far as screens, a magnet won't affect your LCD at all, but they make CRT's do fun things.

It could probably interfere with all sorts of other bits of the laptop, as a magnetic feild affects all currents going through it.

It's not as bad an idea as it sounds (as hard drives are fairly resistant to external magnets), but I wouldn't recommend it.

Here's an Idea I've cooked up and I'm wounding if anyone else tried this.

Get a Kensington cable, wrap it around the passenger seat and the hook it up to the laptop. This should allow me to position the laptop in away so I can see the GPS/MAP data while driving(At quick glances down, like looking at the Radio or clock)

Should I come to a quick stop the cable should hold the laptop on the set.

Thoughts?
