Recently, my manager got bit by a rattlesnake we were treating for an infection in its venom sack. It fenagled its way out of its isolation tube (just a clear home aquarium siphon head), turned and managed to bite my manager in the meat of his hand.
The snake hadn't eaten in 1.5 months, so lots of venom built up, and my manager got a full dose. On top of all that, the snake had been living with a desert tortoise, that we know carries salmonela. All in all, my manager ends up in the hospital and septic. It was a wonder that he lived, much less was able to not lose his arm....partly because of some negligence on the side of the paramedic and ER staff (delayed treatments).
Anyway, he's been in the hospital almost a month, back and forth between the progressive care unit and intensive care unit. Has had quite a number of surgeries, and at least (at last count) 8 doses of anti-venin, at $11K a pop.
Go here to get an idea of what they had to do (graphic pics), and then add septisemia into the mix. My co-workers and I are pondering what the total bill is going to be, but we're guessing around $500K + physical therapy.
Luckily this is all worker's comp, so our employer will be footing this bill. But, what if, someone gets bit and they don't have insurance, very or crappy insurance like the****** plans that wait-staff get, and only covers $7K max, per year. Does the hospital just eat the cost? I know I wouldn't be able to ever work off $500K.
cliffs:
- Manager bit by rattlesnake
- All in all, ridiculously huge hospital bill (probably $500K+)...worker's comp though
- What would someone with crappy insurance or no insurance do in this case, if it wasn't worker's comp?
