Ridiculous cable problem

So back on MLK day my Time Warner cable internet got all wonky. Pings jumped from 60ms to between 400 and 1400ms. Internet became basically unuseable, no gaming, nothing. I tried power cycling the modem, and that gives me 60ms pings for about 1 minute before it gets crappy again

So I called them, and their tech was supposed to come that Friday. He calls me Friday and says it's an area wide problem, and that they're working to resolve it.

It never gets resolved for me. So I call back last monday, they schedule me another Friday appointment. The tech comes out, looks around a bit, looks at the config screen for my cable modem and says that the line is way out of spec. But he can't fix it, they'll need one of the big trucks to do that, but it should be resolved in 24 hours.

So here I sit Tuesday night, still pinging on average, 1066ms to yahoo.com. I called them again, another tech is coming... you guessed it, Friday.

:( :(

Yes, because everyone knows that to edit a config screen, you're going to need a bigger truck.

Did you power down your cable modem for at least 1 minute to reset all sync ? Really power it down and wait 60 seconds - better if you do 120.

If they rolled a truck they'll be able to fix it. As long as you POWERED DOWN YOUR MODEM FOR AT LEAST 60 SECONDS!

I'm not talking, oh - I reset it. POWER IT DOWN FOR 60 SECONDS.

I had a similar issue that went on for months, until I finally got someone out to the house... and as soon as he saw the modem he asked... "how long have you had service... I haven't seen that model modem in a couple of years" lol

New modem... problem went away. :)

(BTW it took so long partially due to my laziness and partially due to the fact that all my calls to technical support only got me the help desk and it wasn't until I found and called a "Customer Support" number did someone come to the house)

Verizon Fios is your answer; hopefully it will be available to you soon. those of us that have it and the blazing fast speed feel your pain (not really).

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Nebor. I look forward to hearing how the bigger truck comes into play.
