once upon a time, to upgrade an armada e700 from 128mb to 576mb cost more than the laptop itself.

That's a $730 discount. What do I win?

Yeah, you don't win. Look again won't work in an imac.

:embarassed; Whoops.

Easy mistake to make. My buddy and I were spec'ing out our new work laptops. We almost went with 4 x 2gb DIMMS by accident. We would have been really pissed. That is when I realized the insane price of 4gb sticks. When we were looking it was running around $1200 for 8gb(2 x 4gb) from crucial and that was the exact same price apple was charging. Now apple is charging a little less and the price has really come down from 3rd parties.

Two out of stock places. And one that is a little cheaper than directly with crucial. You go order from those places. I will stick to zipzoom, newegg, crucial, mushkin and the like.

Where?

They found one place in stock that has it $300 cheaper. So yes it is 25% CHEAPER. But it isn't installed. Do you believe people buying iMacs are qualified to take them apart?

All you need to do is try to figure out how to do an admin install of their crapware Quicktime player to know they suck hard. And before you ask I would love to never have to pollute a workstation with this garbage but education software companies are in love with it and a lot of education apps require it.

Are you seriously trying to say that $300 to install RAM isn't a ripoff? ...Really?

That said, Apple isn't alone in vastly overcharging for components.

To justify not significantly lowering their insanely high RAM prices.

All companies overcharge you when you go to buy RAM, but Apple does it worse than most. Plus, like you mentioned, all Macs now use DDR3. I'm guessing that has something to do with the fact that Apple and Intel are now BFFs.

They charge a ton for hard drives too, but unlike most computers, you can't easily change the hard drive in certain Macs (the Mini and the iMac both make it difficult, especially the iMac). So you're stuck with having to use an external drive if you don't want to get raped (so much for a clean solution without too many cables!).

Apple has never been cheap for upgrades, ever. Not sure why anyone would be surprised.

I am saying all companies charge a lot and apple isn't alone. Is it a ripoff to me? Yes. Is it a ripoff for my mom to pay it? No. I have skills to save some money. My mom saved some of her time so she pays more than I would.

On top of it up until about two months ago, Crucial was actually the same price as apple.

Question their use of DDR3 more than their install surcharge IMO.
