He picked up on it because it wasn't solving the problem- there's a very large difference. Why are people so poor at grammar?

But again, 'putting' a hole in a bucket is simply putting empty space into a bucket, and hence, does not solve the problem of making it lighter.

I would argue that it ceases to fulfull the definition of a bucket once it has a hole in it.
