I never was, am always to be,
No one ever saw me, nor ever will,
And yet I am the confidence of all
To live and breathe on this terrestrial ball.

What am I?

using a balancing scale, how can you weigh 8 seemingly identical balls twice to figure out the heaviest one?

edit for clarity: 7 of the balls are identical, and 1 is heavier. They all look the same.

You're a cyborg in a pistol duel with two other cyborgs. you have been programmed to fire pistols with an accuracy of 33%. the other two cyborgs shoot with accuracies of 100% and 50%, respectively. the rules of the duel are one shot per-cyborg per-round. the shooting order is from worst shooter to best shooter. thus, you go first, the 50% guy goes second, and the 100% guy goes third; repeat. if a cyborg dies, we just skip his or her turn, obviously. what should you shoot at in round 1 to maximize your chances of survival over time?

You are allowed to miss on purpose (i.e. shoot at nothing).

I'm thinking the ground is the best target during the first round.

shoot at nothing
1. if you shoot at 100% first and kill him, then 50% shoots you first
2. if you shoot nothing, 50% tries to kill 100%...
-----if successful, then you get to shoot 50% before he shoots at you
-----if missed, then 100% logically goes after 50%, and leaves you with first shot on 100%

I don't know. I thought someone else would come up with the answer to that. I just tossed out the idea. :p

well, u have a 33% accuracy rate. so 66% chance u miss and hit another cyborg. while aiming will only get u 33%. thus, shoot yourself! w00t!

That makes sense. I hadn't thought about them shooting each other. Are we sure that they shoot at each other, and will aim at the best logical target?

If you shoot at either 2 or 3 your probability of survival is 7/18 or 38.9%, assuming 2 and 3 make optimal choices.

If you shoot at nothing your probability of survival is 5/12 or 41.7%, assuming 2 and 3 make optimal choices.

Put 3 balls on each side.
If they are equal, weigh the other two balls, one on each side - one must be the heavier ball.
If they are not equal, then weigh two of the balls from the heavier side and remember which was the third on that side. If the two you weigh are the same, then the third one is the heaviest. If the two you weigh are different, well, then you've found the heavier of the two.
