hit me!

Ok, have fun:

Touch my shaft just right
I grow to full size
Show me in broad daylight
People will surely be surprised
An umbrella?

Yep, didn't think it would take long for people to guess after they extracted their minds from the gutter ;)

If you saw someone with an open umbrella in broad daylight, you'd probably look at them strange. Some umbrellas have a button on the shaft to open them.

the only thing that threw me off on that one was that some people use umbrellas at the beach.

if its umbrella then I'd argue that there can be sunny raining, in which case using an umbrella in broad daylight would not be suprising.

Yes, I considered the sunny, rainy days, but rarely do you see those (at least around here). If I mentioned "sunny" day, it would have given it away (and the hidden humor would have lost its effect earlier). How could I have phrased that part better without giving it away? Thought?

You did fine. It just took a little thought...riddles are supposed to be somewhat vague anyway...that's the point. ;)

Michael Jackson.

That works, but Wacko Jacko is the answer to every strange riddle ;)

Well, I don't live in rural Alabama, but I've visited those types of places. You'll see the answer to the question there -- a southern/backwoods/redneck family.

Another beginning to one:

Although I am dead, I cover the living,
Many survive through the warmth I am giving,

Fur coat?

Yep. Too easy, it's tough to make them hard enough to think about but easy enough to be solvable.

OK, another lame one here, but it's worth a shot. Hopefully this will keep everyone guessing for a while:

Use me at the beach
Use me inside
If you play with me too much
Rough will become my hide

Not what I was looking for, but I guess it works. Making rat-tails with towels constitutes playing, eh? ;)

There's probably a multitude of answers for this one. If no one guesses my answer, I'll reword the riddle a bit.

good call!

Oh, and Goth, the answer to the penniless man and a feather bed thing was
"one is hard up, the other is soft down" just in case you didn't google it yet

That's it. Being a volleyball player, I didn't want to be too specific in the riddle or I'd give it away. It's hard to narrow down a riddle's wording to one thing without giving it away.

Yeah, like I would have ever figured that out ;)
At least it makes sense and it's not as vague as the needle and thread.
