Depends on the size of the forest whether it will ever reach it, the nr of predators, hunters, traps, the terrain, the condition the dog is in, whether the dog wants to run into the forest in the first place, etc.

About this "halfway" crap...
Put the water into the jug. You would argue that since the water went to the bottom of the jug that after it passed half way it was going out of the jug?
What if there was an impenetrable fence at the far side of the forest... would you still argue that after half-way the dog was running out of the forest? I'd say, "Hey Rover, you dumb-fvck. You're going the wrong way. Out is the other way. You're just running farther *into* the forest.
