It seems like a dangerous strategy - Perry is himself an Australian citizen with a faked American birth certificate.

The other part of this story is that the media is still playing 'gotcha journalism' with certain candidates. It was a stupid question and the only thing it really showed is how unprepared Perry is. His staff should have him better prepared for such shenanigans.

His initial answer was legitimate. Sherr chose to push the yes or no answer. He chose not to answer it with yes or no. He was messing with her at that point by bringing up Trump.

It's like the other questions she brought up about Gore > climate change > science where she tried to back him into corner and he bounced back with the aerodynamics and physics to be an air force jet pilot.

I don't like Perry but it was obvious that Sherr was asking him a lot of questions trying to set him up.

How is it 'gotcha' journalism when he repeatedly endorsed that exact position? As best I can tell, the new definition of 'gotcha' journalism is any time someone asks a question that a Republican candidate gives a dumb answer to.

Pretty much this. Evil media. It's like when they asked Palin how her day was and she went on some long rant that earned her ridicule. The media are monsters with such loaded questions.

No way that was gotcha journalism, unless you are defining gotcha journalism ala Palin-any question I give an especially stupid answer to is gotcha journalism. The interviewer bent over backwards to try to get Perry to clarify the subject PERRY brought up and offered him numerous opportunities to do so. Perry danced away from it as he realized he was getting off the topic his handlers had assigned him to stick to-his new better-than-Cain's tax reduction/SS gutting plan.

Incidentally have you noticed there is little to no discussion of Perry's new tax plan? In my view that's because its so obviously a gift to the ultra-rich at the expense of the rest of us or Perry is such toast that he is now irrelevant.

The biggest problem with Perry's new tax plan is that it is optional. The only people that will choose to use it are people that will pay less tax by doing so. By definition, this will lead to less revenue when we are already running a deficit. I don't understand how these plans even see the light of day before being vetted for stupidity.
 
And adding to the VRWC, Bill O had Perry on his show yesterday and didn't even mention him diving back into birtherism. Fox talkinh heads have totally avoided the subject.

And no, this wasn't a case of unpreparedness. You think that any serious candidate in this primary has not thought out his or her position on the birther issue when it is a major issue with the GOP base? No, this is Perry trying to play off both sides, on the one hand not wanting to alienate moderate conservatives and independents by endorsing birtherism, and on the other, not wanting to alienate the core base. It's typical behavior of a pol running for office in this country and you call it a lack of preparedness.

There are far more substantive issues to question these candidates on. Perry, or any other candidate, has policies that directly affect the US if they were to govern. Whether or not Perry has seen Obama's BC, or what he may think about it has no direct policy or governing implications.

Given that a President's primary responsibility is foreign affairs and being Commander-in-Chief I think it obvious that questions along those lines should be paramount. Additional questions about domestic policy carry importance because of the President's ability to veto.

Obama's BC, as well as stuff like evolution or even abortion are irrelevant because a President has exactly zip to do with any of it.

Yes, I call it a lack of preparedness. If someone asks a candidate a 'yes or no' type question where either answer is going to cause problems (e.g., have you stopped beating your wife) they should be able to finesse their way around it or blow it off. He did neither.

Because it was, as you describe, a no-win type question that is utterly irrelevant in terms of presidential policy it was 'gotcha journalism'.
