Richard Dawkins seeks arrest of Pope

If the pope really did help to cover up his minions' kiddy-fiddling then I applaud this move and I think it's disappointing that someone like Dawkins has to campaign for the arrest. Of course this is excellent publicity for Dawkins too.

Sorry if it's a repost, I did a search.

British author and atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins will try to have Pope Benedict arrested to face questions over the Catholic church's child abuse scandal when he visits Britain later this year, one of his lawyers say.

Dawkins, a scientist and outspoken critic of religion, has asked human rights lawyers to examine whether charges could be brought against the pope.

The four-day trip, from September 16 to 19, will be the first papal visit since Pope John Paul II's pastoral visit in 1982 and is the first official papal visit to Britain.

The Catholic church has rejected claims the pope helped to cover up abuse by priests and the Vatican has accused the media of waging a "despicable campaign of defamation" against him.

Dawkins and the English journalist Christopher Hitchens have commissioned lawyers Geoffrey Robertson and Mark Stephens to explore ways of taking legal action against the pope.

In an email to Reuters, Stephens said there are three possible approaches: a complaint to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, a private or public prosecution "for crimes against humanity" or a civil case.

They will argue that the pope does not have diplomatic immunity from prosecution as a head of state because the Vatican has "permanent observer status" at the United Nations rather than full membership and voting rights.

Dawkins, author of The God Delusion and The Selfish Gene, told the Sunday Times newspaper that he suspected child abuse by church members had been covered up.

Hitchens, who published a book in 2007 called God Is Not Great: The Case Against Religion, said: "This man is not above or outside the law. The institutionalised concealment of child abuse is a crime under any law."

Critics have accused Benedict of negligence in handling abuse cases in previous roles as a cardinal in his native Germany, and in Rome.

The Vatican has denied any cover-up over the abuse of 200 deaf boys in the United States. The pope has not commented directly on the wave of sexual abuse allegations that has shaken the church around the world, including the United States, Ireland, Italy and Germany.

Some of the stuff I have read, if true, would seem to me to make the Catholic Church a serial pedophile organization. For instance, in Germany, the Church allegedly knew of repeated charges against a Priest, but did not report him to the authorities. It could even be claimed they aided the priest by transferring him out of the country to keep him safe from being charged.

If you're a pedophile you shouldn't get any special treatment if your a Priest. And the Catholic Church needs to obey the law 100 percent. If they know or suspect a priest is a pedophile, if its the law in that country they must report him, then they must report him. If they don't they should get no special treatment. Off to jail with them, I say.

From bitching to people about Global Warming in the middle of a raging blizzard, to covering up pedophile priests, the Catholic Church has made tremendous efforts to imitate the Democrat party.

While I agree that the Pope (or any ranking member of the Church) should not be above the law, and should be held accountable for any actions taken in covering up child abuse .. the simple fact is, the Pope is untouchable.

How did I know TehMac would be first to make a stupid comment?

Oh man, I'm not gonna touch that one.

I've thought about starting a thread asking why nations in which the Catholic Church has knowingly protected pedophiles against justice don't just close the church down until they cooperate. It's incredible that this is allowed to happen.

RICO baby, RICO.

Just a move for publicity. The Vatican is its own little country. The Pope is Head of State there. Thus, absolutely untouchable.

The Pope has diplomatic immunity because the Vatican is a sovereign state. Dawkins won't be successful.

Still, it brings up questions as to why the Vatican is sovereign in the first place. It's the only religion to have a whole country to itself as a base of operations. Likely to avoid being prosecuted for nefarious deeds in the first place.

Countries are going to need to explore this on a diplomatic channel. The Vatican is actively harbouring people accused of serious crimes.

I don't see any country going to war (legal war) with the Vatican any time soon.

Dawkins surely knows that the Pope will never be arrested or even questioned - no British government official will put his neck on the line and authorize that.

If all he does is bring some negative publicity to the Church, it's still a good thing.

Woahhh I need to do some reading. Had no idea the pope was in trouble with the law.

The pope is nothing but a regular person, a sinner, just like everyone of us - capable of committing sinful acts just like the rest of us. I hate how the catholic church treats him like he's the second coming of Christ or something. 😛
