I JUST learned a few weeks ago how to drive manual...

and that happened to me on the second day after I learned, and luckily saved my engine because I caught the clutch

Keep in mind it was my SECOND day after trying it....I was downshifting on a highway exit and went from 5th to 3rd instead of 4th.....going 60mph...

still.....that guy is a dumbasss....

<---NOT a dumbass...just a newbie:D

that video is AT LEAST a year old. and it's been posted at least twice before. and the mis-shift still seems premeditated (to me at least).

1) Missing a shift is an accident, it hardly quailfies you as a dumbass.

2) Cars these days have rev limiters, they don't blow up if you miss a shift.

3) How could you accidentally hit 3rd instead of fourth? 5th -> 4th: stick comes straight down and slightly to the left. 5th -> 3rd: stick comes down to neautral, over to the left, and then back up to 3rd. They're not even close to similar motions. It'd be a lot easier to accidentally do 5th-> reverse.

... which is effectively impossible, syncro'd or not.

Don't most transmissions make you double-clutch to get into reverse, and only while you're standing still? Well, mine does anyway. :frown:

Edit: Should have refreshed the thread. Killbat beat me to it.

Unless you're smart enough to hit the clutch right away (i.e., most people), a downshift can and will kill your engine.

I said miss a shift, not downshift. And also, you can still hit reverse from 5th. The tranny won't go into gear, and it'll make a god awful grinding noise, but it's still hitting reverse.

from what it sounds like, he never made it into gear and mashed on it while in neutral (edit, forget it! the camera jumps forward, so he downshifted by mistake... I didn't notice that at first :p)

I didn't mean an intentional downshift, say you mean to shift to 3rd and you hit 1st by mistake.... And yeah, if you try to go into reverse while moving you'll just grind the hell out of the dogs in the tranny... My car (and many other VW's and BMWs) have the reverse up by the 1st gear, with a lockout, so that can't happen :D

Ahh, the beauty of having a torquey engine and a light rear end. I'm more likely to have the rear end skid than blow the engine. Sometimes when I aggressively downshift w/o braking aggresive enough the rear wheels start sliding until the engine catches up or the car slows down enough.

i've done that before.
:D

not necessarily miss my 5th gear...
but redlined at 4th... only to put it in 3rd.

i was racing in my 97 integra gs-r...
with some mid 80's porsche.

i beat him by a car's length.
when i crossed the line, i was doing 7500+rpm in 4th gear.
rather than braking, i thought it'd be cool to downshift and let the engine slow me down.

but in excitement of winning, i completely forgot that i was near my 8000 rpm redline.

of course, when i put it in 3rd, my rpm swung above 9000 rpm line...
i clutched immediately ... and prayed... that my engine was okay.

and now... about 100k after that event, it still runs fine. :)

and since the day i got schooled by a 98 camaro
(he kept on accelerating at 120mph... integra's take forever to go from 120-140.)
i stopped racing.

anyhow... thank God for those limiters.

I know my car has a lockout (91 Accord) that doesn't let you go into reverse from 5th unless you go to neutral first. Also, downshifting to 3rd from 60 isn't terrible assuming your car is geared to allow it. I can do 80 in 3rd, more if I took it right to redline.

wow... 91 accord let's you do more than 80 on 3rd?

my integra will let me do 85 at 8000rpm (redline)
