Rice: Pullout from Iraq ?fairly soon'

WASHINGTON, Nov 23: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Tuesday that the United States would start withdrawing troops from Iraq when the Iraqi armed forces were ready to take over security responsibilities, and this may happen ?fairly soon?.

Hours after Ms Rice indicated the possible withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, some US newspapers reported that the Pentagon plans to recall three combat brigades from Iraq early next year.

One of these three brigades, however, would be ?on call? in Kuwait to deal with any sudden development, the reports said. The US currently has 18 brigades in Iraq.

?The president has said that as soon as Iraqi forces are ready, we want to see a reduction in our forces, ? Ms Rice told Fox News, adding: ?I think those days are going to be coming fairly soon when Iraqis are going to be more and more capable of carrying out the functions to secure their own future.?

...and leave the militants to destroy Iraq in the form of a full fledged civil war? :disgust:

I take her remarks with a grain of salt, an immediate and unconditional withdrawl would be a very bad idea. Not to mention, I'd like to know her definition of an immediate withdrawl.

Geee, as ratings drop... and money is hard to find...

What are they suppose to do? But I guess when they do pull out, like if it could last forever... They are gonna piss off the other side of the camp, then the reality of bush's war will set in. Why the hell did we go over there again???????

Civil war is inevitable. Hussein's brutality was the only thing preventing it. We just replaced Hussein. You have 3 groups, the Sunni, the Shiites, and the Kurds, that'll be at others throats whether we pull out now, or twn years from now.

How many American lives and how much of my money, as a taxpayer, will be waste delaying the inevitable?

Isn't it odd how the same suggestions by Democrats in Congress are attacked by the Administration as beeing Weak on Terrorism and
not being patriotic and supporting the Troops, but when it's presented by the GOP it's such a brilliant strategy for the Conservative Right.

That's an old tactic used by Hawks of both parties from the years past

" Fairly soon " means exactly nothing. But it seems clear that the Bush administration must either rap this up soon or public opposition to the war will keep growing. Which in turn ties it to the popularity of
W. Bush that has not been too robust lately.

But at this point, I also feel its an illusion of control thing also.

A very high probability now exists that Iraq will really disintegrate into a civil war. In which case no one can be in control, no plan other than sheer panic can exist, and that too can happen with about the speed the Shah fell in Iran.

But still gotta agree with Red Dawn, its the usual putting lip stick on a pig. Maybe we will do this and maybe not. Just depends how bright the light at the end of the tunnel is? I am optimistic we are control. I'll talk your ear off and spend hours saying exactly nothing in perfect english sentences is a Condi Rice trademark.

From the demenor, one would never know people are dying over there.

and Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

Nothing new since.

Its fruitless to say Rice is full of beans.

If Condi was not saying it, they would find some other idiot equally adept. They have so many of them anyway.

Standard operating proseidure for all governments.

Thats why we are supposed to have bull ****** detectors..

My bullcrap detector already had gone off when Bush's popularity was about 90% as he was invading Iraq. Image that, all those WMD inspectors on the ground. As they knocked on the front gate, clever Saddam always was moving the WMD out the back gate which is why we never found any WMD. Not only did Saddam do this, he did it every time. Such a clever and dangerous man.

Where was the American public's bull ****** detector then?-------still missing in action?

Its certainly not engaged wondering what all this US sponsored torture will implie as we havest world hatred. Nor is any in the Bush administration as they gain a reputation for prevayers of fine bullcrap and other lies.

In the grand scheme of things I will leave for history to judge whom was the more clever and dangerous man-------W. Bush or Saddam?

Spokespersons for bad public policy are but dime a dozen.

 Declare victory and go home. You won't fix that place...it's like the ghetto no matter how much money you throw it's a cultural change that must come from within.

Wish it were that simple Zebo,

In for a penny, in for a pound. Sadly getting out now might well cause worse problems.

But fools rush in where angels fear to tread about covers it.

But cheer up, Bush will only pay in popularity, we taxpayers ( at least those still alive ), get to pay for this fine mess.

But we always have a solution-------let our children pay while we enjoy the fruits of the growing national debt.

We always have our choice.

Its the tax and spend democrats.

Or the don't tax and borrow republicans.

Can't have too many of the latter because someday no one extends the credit to finance the borrowing. But stupid wars like Iraq just makes things worse but wins the race to the poorhouse.

.

You may hear that from politicians who like to play with words while they continue thier bankrupt policies but the facts are Iraqis are dying at an alarming rate over there primarly due to our pressence and muitions there, and the military is getting chewed up pretty badly as well again primarly due to our pressence there. Americans can't wait for 20-40-60 years while Iraqis sorts things out, at our expense.

Zebo,

You are right on much of what you say.

Just wish we were not in this damned if we do and damned if we don't position.

But whatever is decided, we must be prepared for bitter consequences.

And all roads may lead to ruin.

Just as I've been predicting.

The GOP will be reframing the situation in Iraq and declaring "Victory" and start the withdrawal.

Rather amazing how the M$M will fall in lock-step with them and ignore the fact that the Democrats and other anti-war movements have been pressuring the administration for any type of exit plan (esp. considering that many in this administration and the Congress called for exactly the same of Clinton re: the Balkans)
