Whats up with Rice Cookers? At frys you can get one for $10 bux, or you can get one for like $150! In the end don't you have the same ol' rice?

Nope - they're basically pressure cookers, but some are better calibrated than others - it's kinda like cars, I suoppose . . . ;)

The more expensive ones have timers, different cooking styles, are automated.. stuff like that.

The expensive rice cookers come from Japan, and a lot of Japanese electronics have a lot of extra gizmos and stuff...

N0, the 10 buck ones usually burn the rice if not cooked properly. THe 150 buck one make PERFECT rice everytime :)

That said, my family owns a 150 buck rice cooker ;) We live in the south, and are white, and my friends and family members are always mystified by it. My mother used to be station in Okinawa, so she picked up a lot of Asian cooking there. Naturally, we had to get a nice rice cooker since we eat rice with almost every meal :)

In the end you'll all have cooked rice... but how well they're done, and how easy it was, depends on the cooker. Personally, any will do for me. I don't need anything fancy... i don't need a timer to tell me how to cook, and nor do i need one to keep my rice warm throughout the day.

Our $10 Rice Cooker bought in 1990 is still held sacred in our family, all my aunts have the same exact one. Never have burnt rice, and always perfect w/ just the rite moistness.

I was considering getting one for the dorm next year since rice is dirt cheap and it's easy to make w/ a rice cooker.

Does anybody know if they have open heating elements? That's what's 'not allowed' here in my dorms.

The first time my Aunt saw it, she was like,

Aunt - "What in darn tarnations is that thing?!?!"
Me - Uh, a rice cooker.
Aunt - "You have a machine that cooks rice?!?!"
Me - Yes, that's what it does...
Aunt - "So you mean you don't cook your rice in a pot over the stove."
Me - No.
Aunt - "So you're telling me that this little machine does it all? How do you know when it's done? How do you not burn your rice"
Me - Uh, it doesn't burn rice, it has a self timer.
Aunt - "You're shittin' me - how can it do that"
Me - IT JUST DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :|

You'll soon find out in the dorms, as long as they don't catch you, it's not illegal. ;););) Especially small crap like that.

Yep, mines a Zojirushi. The 150 bucks also bought us a pretty orchid print on the side of the cooker :D

no they don't have open heating elements. it's all in the casing.

you dont' really need very fancy ones with an lcd display and everything. most of these rice cookers work by measuring the temperature b/c when the rice dries out the temperature will increase and that's when the cooker goes from cooking mode to keeping warm mode. my family has one and we use it everday and it never burns rice, and can keep it warm safely for hours.

Zojirushi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else.

Spent $149 on mine (amazon gold box special) and it's used every day to make the best rice EVER.

ditto

the brand of rice makes a huge difference, speaking from experience.

well when you have to cook like 6 cups of rice everyday, a rice cooker comes in really handy because it's so easy and they keep the rice warm. the rice cookers are really meant for east asians

I'm not asian and I am considering getting one. I'd never seen one used until somebody at my work used it over Spring Break to make some sample rice and it was really neat. It did everything for you and you never had to touch it.

It will be nice so I don't have to actually cook for myself ;)

We had a communal rice cooker in my apartment. 5 Asian guys, one white. It was pretty much always full, so I'd say it paid for itself.
