Music Industry: Piracy is choking sales.

"This year's figures hold no surprises," said Jay Berman, chief executive officer of the IFPI. "Widespread use of illegal sites, made easier with the growth of broadband access in the major markets, is affecting an industry that is also having to compete with increased sales of other entertainment formats such as DVD films and new video game consoles."

Damn... piracy was also to blame when no one bought my sh!t on Ebay because I kept raising the goddamn prices!!!

Fvck the RIAA... Haven't they done any studies to see how much the "Former CD buyer now Fvck the RIAA" club is affecting sales? Seriously, what the fvck kind of corporation is allowed to alienate their biggest customers and call them theives. I don't care if they think I'm a thief... but when they label me as one and close down legal (Napster) services, then that's just bullsh!t. I'm not buying any of their sh!t.

Is there any other way to hurt them more financially than not buying their crap? Like.. can I unbuy their stuff or something to hurt them more?

And you know what? Fvck the artists that it will hurt when the RIAA goes plop. Good artists will survive.

Increased sales of DVD films? Might I point out the widespread copying of divx and xvid materials over the same broadband lines? And how somehow the dvd industry not only survives, but thrives in an age when piracy is not only commonplace, but growing in acceptance. One day, everything will be shareware, and people will still profit from their own efforts.

This is so annoying to hear the RIAA whine every single chance they get. They should lower cd prices to stay competitive , as dvd prices have shown to be competitive when they have lowered their prices.

People will pay for a quality product and for the convenience of having a manufactured disc but they will not pay outrageous amounts of money. I would like to buy CD's that are $5.00 over spending my time to downloading an album that has been reduced in audio sound quality due to compression.

Honestly why do people complain about the prices of cd's? Nobody thought it was so bad until file sharing sites came up. Sounds kind of like an excuse to me.

What rock do you live under? People have bitched about CD prices since they're never come down from the initial launch back in the 80's. Hell, you can buy a cheap portable CD PLAYER for the price of two CDs these days.

Sounds like a troll to me.

Whats funny is that broadband and piracy is even more common in East Asia, yet music/CD sales are great over there.

Wow, very clever. Sorry that I've just never felt horrible screwed paying 15 bucks for a cd. With the prices of most forms of entertainment raising over the years (sporting events, moive tickets, etc) a cd staying the same price doesn't sound so horrible. You're entitled to you opinion. Just don't call me a troll for mine.

part that threw me off. CDs came out, they were twice as much as a cassette (and the players were expensive as hell too) but people were OK with this since it was new technology and such. We figured that the prices would come down over time as do most things. Guess what, the players got cheap, but the CDs stayed the same. Your argument that they might even have gotten more expensive based on increases in ticket prices and such doesn't really hold water either since movies have gotten more expensive to make, sports teams have ever more obnoxious payrolls (*cough*Yankees*cough*) but it really doesn't cost more to actually make a CD. If anything, it costs less thanks to digital editing and such. Sure, some artists make more than they used to, but I'll bet their salaries are a pittance compared to the advertising budget the labels wield when saturating the market with the latest pop creation (*cough*TaTu*cough*) to boost sales of crappy music. They're going about it all wrong and $18 CDs is only one example.

Well I noticed CDs *are* getting lower in prices.

When I can pay $5 for a full album in 190/256Kbps MP3 format to download, I'll start buying music again.

Music from the past few years has been very craptastic. Why wont they just admit it?

In order for me to buy a new CD, it has to be from a band/person that I really, really like. For everything else, I'll either watch MTV or go to a pawn shop ($3or4 for $10) or secondhand CD store.
