RIAA starts going after students

They dont care about the students really i think, my guess is they want to charge the university who runs the connection that they downloaded the music on liable some how and get them to plug access to music sharing and downloading at the source. Smart move of Kazaa, being based on some small island somewhere, with no copyright laws and extradition treaty with the US.

I guess that whole illegally distributing copyrighted material thing shouldn't aply to poor college students

It's not that college students should be exempt as an ideal, but from the RIAA's perspective, I don't see them having any financial gain involved going after kids without money. Don't kid yourself, they're not in it for anything other than the bucks, just like the rest of us.

And what did we learn from Tienanmen Square? Going after students is NOT COOL!

You're comparing the RIAA going after bunch of college kids for doing something that is against the law to Tienanmen Square?

Why don't you just go the full nine and call them Nazis?

Granted that the RIAA has been going about this all the wrong ways, but they are completely within their rights to sue anyone who is distributing music illegally.

They are Nazi's. They say that file sharing caused the decline in CD sales(something llike 8-9%), but what they didn't say in that report is
that there was a 13-15% decrease in the amount of CDs released over the previous year.
So they actually had an increase in % of CD sales

Call up and mobilize the EFF 'cause we've got another internet injustice on our hands, signaling the rebirth of internet censorship and the next Nazi regime!

Com'on, it's a few college students pirating music -- what part of that can you see as legal?

Unless they start systematically killing millions of college students around the country, calling them Nazis is way over the top.

The amount of CD sales is also irrelevant to this thread. If people were buying loads of CDs it wouldn't make distributing copyrighted materials legal.

It's called poor planing, they should have known people hate paying for ANYTHING.

ps: a copywright on anything that's available in a form that can be distributed with ease is lame as well.

Yeah these record companies should just let people download.

In FACT I beleive they should be forced to pay for the bandwidth so we can download it faster.

Just because a company is trying to protect it assests does not make them evil sorry.

The real problem here is, the RIAA gets busted for ripping off it's customers for over a decade and they get a slap, no, a tap on the wrist. Then the RIAA goes after kids that are ripping them off an these kids will most likely face jail time, huge legal fees, and will probably cost them their entire future.

Please tell me most of you whiners are not in college! If you can't figure out why you can't download copyrighted material for free and you are in college, we have had a total failure of the educational system !!Grow up! Get a job, make some money and buy it!

Personally I think the RIAA should get a bill passed that puts people in jail for every illegal mp3 they have.

People do not have the right to copy their cd's to mp3 format. You do not own that cd. You pay $15 for the right to lease that cd. If the RIAA calls you up tomorrow and says they want all their cd's back you better pack them up in a box and send them to them. And don't expect a dime back.

Also I think when they get that bill passed they should have a requirement that every person must have a piece of software that detects if you have anything illegal on your system. Don't register that shareware after 30 days. Off to jail with you. Download an MP3, it's the electric chair for you pal.

Also I think they should raise cd prices to $30 a cd and stop paying the artists so much. 25 cents a cd is way too much. They should drop it to 5 cents a cd. The RIAA is hardly making enough money and their executives are only making 7 figure salaries. They need to be making 8 figure salaries for all the hard work they do.

Finally they should have a worship the RIAA day where we all bow before the almighty executives of the RIAA.

You forgot "again"
The RIAA would stop you from creating/downloading MP3s of albums you already own if they could and make you buy them. It's all about the greed.

How did the RIAA rip people off?

I think what many of you are forgetting is that music CD's are a luxury and not a necessity. You are not entitled to free entertainment. Just like with any luxury item the logic is simple, just because you can't afford doesn't mean you have right to steal. I do not buy the whole "poor college student" argument simply because if I were to follow that logic, I could justify stealing some guy's Porsche, simply because "I couldn't afford it".

Sales of CD's, like any other commodity, are driven by supply/demand market. If you feel that prices are too high, don't buy. If enough of you "get on the same page", maybe RIAA will "get the message", though I highly doubt it, since RIAA does not control CD prices.

Another idiotic argument I hear is "musicians are making too much money". I do not hear anyone complaining about movie tickets or DVD prices because "actors make too much money". How is it any different?

Ah screw the RIAA, can't the record companies figure out how to make enough money without those idiots helping them??

EDIT: oh yeah, and why is it so bad to distribute mp3s, you can always rip the same music off the radio if you want, I see no real difference
