Sorry if it's been asked before, but I'm curious. Is it legal to download the videos for songs off Kazaa? Technically it's the music, so do they control music videos too? Can I get in trouble for sharing videos just like if I were sharing the music?

Also, if I own the CD for the videos I download, is that illegal? Who would go after me? MPAA since it's video or RIAA since it's music or both?

The MPAA is the Movie Picture Association of America I think. The RIAA is the Recording Industry Association of America. Videos are not Movies, they fall under the RIAA's domain (especially since members of the RIAA own the copyrights ;)).

You are not supposed to download anything from the net involving RIAA affiliated artists. Period.

Can't you download videos from MTV's website? I don't see how they could get you for this if MTV is giving them away, but I bet they would think up something.

That's exactly what I'm thinking nitemare. It seems like a horrible double standard all around, not that this issue hasn't been beat into oblivion. What would stop me from using my Tivo or other device from recording the music that plays on my digital audio channels on my digital cable? I'll stop now.

Because you are not getting the content through their approved media outlets.

Sorry to nitpick, but it's the Motion Picture Association of America.
And yes, I believe that the RIAA has the stance that even downloading music videos constitutes copyright infringement. It's their property, they paid to create it, and they would like to sell it, not have people d/l it for free.

Even if I own the CD? I rarely, if ever see a compilation of the music videos for an album sold and I absolutely hate watching MTV.

If you own a cd of the music videos you do not need to download them.

I own a CD of the music, not the videos. They don't produce the videos on disc for purchase. So is what I'm doing illegal? I don't share them either.

I'd probably not tell anyone you downloaded it either. It would be best if you lowered all your blinds, looked outside for strange vehicles or vans and put on headphones when watching it. You might want to delete it afterwards as well....and if anyone asks you don't know me.

I have bought VHSes and DVDs of videos. Yes, what you are doing is probably illegal. I'm not a lawyer though, so this is only speculation.
