How would you like to get this email from your college kid, the one you're shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for to pay for his education?

"Hi Mom: The recording industry says I owe them $3,000 or they're going to sue me! Help!"

Help, indeed. As I wrote in a previous post, the Recording Industry Association of America is getting tough on illegal music downloads, and taking aim where free downloads are as common as Frisbees, college campuses.

IMO, the RIAA is a group of ego driven nutjobs who are just trying to keep their own paycheck coming in. Nothing they do matches their true intentions, which isn't expected anyway so I probably shouldn't even hope for that.

Those students should unite together, each chip in 500 bucks and sue the RIAA back.

Hell maybe they can get more students at the university to sue as well.

I have no idea what they could possibly sue for... but I'm sure there is something.

What are they going to sue for? These people have been caught STEALING protected music. Why should anybody cut them some slack? How would you feel if your boss told you that you wouldn't get paid for going to work tomorrow? Well people who pirate software, music and movies are doing the same thing to their respective industries.

Just a question...I'm sure there is an easy answer since I haven't really thought it through.

Would you consider me taking a high resolution digital photo of a painting in an art museum and framing it in my house stealing?

Awww, sniff, sniff, boo hoo. I feel terrible for the poor music industry. The same industry that has been found guilty of price fixing and payola schemes, not to mention bribing our public officials to extend copyright until it's essentially unending. Fsck the music industry. Fsck them in their stupid asses. I don't download their garbage music and I certainly won't pay for it. But I'll cheer on anybody who steals their stuff.

I'd be angry that my boss didn't do something about the issue. If he wants the business to continue, the employees have to stay. If they're being fired and it won't make a difference, maybe they weren't needed in the first place.

While you do make a good point, I blame the companies who use the RIAA to do this - they should listen to customers and find a solution.

Quit drinking the RIAA's koolaid. If they were actually even caught for anything, it was for infringing on copyright, which is NOT THE SAME THING AS THEFT.

Just buy from other places and not from the big 4.
There are plenty of other online music stores which aren't like Napster etc and don't have DRM.
Nettwerk have 2 choices for downloads of some stuff, unprotected mp3's, or lossless .flac downloads (for like a buck more than the mp3's)

I am against theift and think the RIAA has every right to sue offenders. BUT i am agianst the tactics they are useing. I t hink they should have actual proof that someone has dowloaded songs.

they should be able to say who downloaded what at what time. None of this blanket "john doe" suits where they sue dead people and 80 yr old grandmothers etc

I think RIAA is about the worst damn organization there is, but I can't forgive college students that think they are above the law either.

I'm torn on this issue. I think the RIAA takes sh!t too far, but I think that every thief should be punished severely.

Play the "You can't prove it was me because my router is open" card. There's nothing they can do against that.

The RIAA is a despicable organization but that doesn't excuse piracy, if the RIAA can prove their case (a big if) then they should nail this guy.

Do artists actually need the RIAA anymore? With today's technology, I would think that they could easily promote their own stuff?

This is part of the reason for the harshness. The RIAA is struggling to remain relevant in today's world. As evidence, look how Jobs outmaneuvered them on keeping 99c songs on iTunes.

my question is, how did they come up with the $3000 number for each and every student?

they calculated 1 dollar more over the cost it would need to bankrupt every college student.

If I were a parent who got this email I would blow it off. I would let them sue ... the students have no (0) assets or ability to pay a judgement. The RIAA is probably seeking to settle out of court. Let them waste their resources suing people who have no ability to pay.
