What the hell is this state all about?

It seems like no one ever talks about it, like other well known states (California and Florida).

It's about clams and state cops. Oh, and sailing. A throwaway state like Delaware. Used to be where the really BIG money resided. OLD money.

How is Newport? My sister is married to a coast guard(er?) and they are getting stationed there this summer.

I lived there for about a year and really loved it, but I was 20 and working on and around boats, and for northeastern sailors Rhode Island is like Maine only a little warmer. Practically speaking it's a corrupt little fiefdom run by crooks from Massachusetts, with no economy to speak of.

It's all about the Breakers; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Breakers

You think you've seen rich?

Walk into The Breakers and check out how they had platinum, instead of silver, in some of the mansion's "ornamentation", because silver rusts. So, no biggie, we'll just buy platinum top get that shiny silvery look!

The Vanderbilts also had the pleasure of making their money well before the government decided to start taxing earnings.

Also, don't you dare take any pictures up in that piece - there are goons all over the place that will kick you out.

Until I was 10 I lived in Middletown, near Newport. Of course, everything in Rhode Island is near Newport. It's not like you can go to far before you're in CT or MA.

I haven't visited in over 20 years, but there are things that stand out to me. Yachts. Fresh seafood. The Newport Creamery. The naval base. Pahking you' ca' to go to the grinde' shop. Lot of Portugese people. Jai alai.

Edit: The last time I visited was actually right when Hurricane Bob hit, so my last view of the place is after being blown apart. :p

Awesome except for parking. I've only ever hung out there in the summer though, but I've gone out there a ton of times. Winter, is probably much less exciting.

My mother went to college in Providence. It seemed to be a great place to be if you were a hippy back then.

My wife grew up in Newport and the running joke is that people from newport need to pack a lunch if they are leaving the island.

Ive lived in RI for almost 45 years so am used to the quirks of this state.

You know it's the smallest state, right? No one talks about it because no one is from that tiny, tiny part of the nation. Similarly, most well-known businesses don't happen to have HQ in the tiniest state. Providence, the biggest city in RI, has a population of only 178k.

A former SO had a family summer house on Newport. It was bigger and more substantial than many mansions, but didn't have a heating system outside of the many fireplaces.

Providence is a pretty nice, vibrant small city. Beaches are nice and reasonably warm (for New England). Entire state is flat as a table and the roads consist mostly of traffic jams heading towards the Cape, Boston or Newport.

You don't need central air when you can just burn stacks of money when it's cold.
