PROVIDENCE, R.I. – This state's official name — The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations — is more than just a mouthful. To many, it evokes stinging reminders of Rhode Island's prime role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

But apparently the name has nothing to do with slavery... I don't have a problem with shortening the name because it's too long but changing it because of political correctness is ridiculous.

This is so silly it almost seems like an election-year ploy to make liberals even worse than they already do right now.

I don't particularly care either way, but a state should never have a name that is larger than the state itself. Were I voting, I'd say nuke it.

They should get rid of the party calling it an 'Island" too.

The State of Rhode.

*sigh*

You know there is a large island named Rhode Island in there, contains the city Newport - then combined with the plantations around Providence...

Grosse Pointe Shores, a suburb of Detroit, was incorporated as a village for about a century. Officially, it was known as 'The Village of Grosse Pointe Shores". Pretty standard for here in Michigan. Everyone called it Grosse Pointe Shores.

In 2009, they decided to incorporate as a city. Their new official name is "The Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, a Michigan City". People still call it Grosse Pointe Shores, though.,

The state name is long and impractical. I see no problem with making it practical.
