RFID project?

I want to do a little "Sunday project" type of thing with RFID tags....essentially I want to set things up so that when a tag passes through a door, it could send a signal back to a computer system noting that something passed through it. Any ideas of where to start hardware-wise, and/or what I'd need for software, too?

I work for an access control company, so let me see what I have stored back in my bench area. I might have some controllers/readers/tags that no longer serve a useful company purpose and therefore could be donated.

Well, no old equipment showed up this time around, but I'll keep an eye for something to become available. Usually comes in spurts after a next product release. I'll let everyone know.
