Just wondering.
Found out about this game not so long ago, seeing if anyone has tried it yet.

impressions?

I'm a level 20 belatto on Spirit. The game is very shallow and a massive grind to level 25 when the pvp really begins. I think the graphics of the weapons keep me hooked.

I leveled 3 toons this weekend one from each race. I got the beta key from a retail copy preorder. I was waiting on this game for a while. Needless to say I cancelled my preorder and haven't played the beta since. Its just not that great of a game. Graphics are iffy. The detail of the architecture, the player models and the weapons are so beautiful it can make your eyes bleed. Thats where it ends. The world is so crap I rather look at the flat fairy flowers of WoW. The AA is also crap. Cranked at High Res + 4xAA +16xAF in my Drivers I still have massive jaggies with skin detail very opaque when you zoom out.

This game centere's around PvP. Its like having unreal tournament in a target lock. The combat feels very Guild Warsey. It has an XP system similar to the original Star Wars Galaxies system IIRC.

I would rather play a unbalanced City of Heroes than RF Online.

my friends quit wow to play this. I don't know what all the hype is about. They'll be crawling back to wow in a few weeks time.

Ok so I got my 7800GT yesterday and I cranked up the AA/AF higher. Maybe it was the drivers I was using... I went back to guru3d 78.82's because the 8 series is crap ( can't use java while dx3d or open gl are being used ) and I must say the IQ is pretty good even when zoomed out. The 7800GT also provides enough ooompf to blow the game's framrates apart.

Still... I can't imagine anyone playing this game unless they like 3 way factional PvP. It reminds me of that movie Final Fantasy : Spirits Within.

horrible grinding game. you get one quest per level, there aren't enough items to use early on and they seem weak compared to the mobs you fight.

its a shallow, boring grindfest.

I would agree but then again I don't think the game is as much focused on the grinding as it is the factional PvP. It has been out a year in Korea and has over 1 million Korean/Chineese subs. Supposedly its the best game in its class and I would offer the the level of refinement of the current game is pretty high programming wise. Beta is actually just testing out the US/UK server infrastructure implant as well localizing the text.

Not a great game by any means. I would pay 7.95 to play it monthly but never 15 and not over EVE/WoW/CoV.

I really enjoy this game a lot. I currently have 3 subscriptions that I pay for (though I always have multiple accounts in MMOs, so it isn't just this one).

What drew me to this game, and is keeping me in this game is that it is basically in a category of it's own when it comes to PVP based MMOs. Unlike WoW, Shadowbane, UO, etc., the faction, not individual, who wins at this game is the faction that works as a group best. Group support and efficiency is what will make you succeed. 1 player doesn't mean ******, it's about how well you fit into the groups amongst your faction, and then how work within your faction.

Yep, the chip wars were really unique in beta. It was the first time I'd ever seen an "elite guild" helping to get EVERYONE in their faction leveled to become the superior power. Usually guilds are exclusive but in RFO the objective is to have as many powerful people on your side as possible and that means educating every "noob" you see as best you can. I have to hand it to them on that.

Unfortunately the rest of the game is an extremely shallow grind the likes of which I hadn't seen since shadowbane's. Even shadowbane kept you moving around more.

Yes, that is what I also liked about RF Online, the whole helping your faction theme, and it seems to be working out pretty well. It helps to eliminate greed which is all too common in MMOs today.

On the side note, you hear the made Shadowbane free now as of a few weeks ago. And at least Shadowbane had AFK macro groups =), but I digress.
