Revisiting Half-Life

So I bought HL along with Opposing Force and Blue Shift. The point was to go back and play them again and see how they compare to the new stuff, HL2 and HL2:EP1. I'm also trying to extract the most amount of story I can, to see if The Saga holds some weight.

I've played HL for about one or two hours so far. Let me tell you this, if it wasn't 5AM right now, I could play for much more time. Not only is the level design FAR superior to HL2, but killing aliens is more satisfying, actually interacting with NPCs and having them help you and tell you bits of the story is great, and finally, there is this mystery about Black Mesa that just draws you in.

Even the level itself can attack you! The AI is a little rusty so far: friendly NPCs shoot me, and enemies aren't the most responsive. The friendly NPCs are somewhat realistic, but their voices, although repetitive, are done really good. You can feel the emotion.

So far this game is awesome. The graphics are... not state of the art, but they get get the job done good enough. And this is without that Blueshift pack that makes some things look nicer.

Let me repeat: A big key to the success of HL is the level design, which made sure Black Mesa was always interesting, exploring the various areas. Instead of the SUPER linear level design of HL2, HL actually has: some areas that might be labeled secrets, in which there is a way to get there if you're smart enough; extra hallways, or rooms to explore beyond the main hallway (sometimes holding interesting animations); imagination when it comes to getting from point A to point B, including platform jumping - going not just forward, but up and down as well.

Glad you are taking the time to revisit this old classic, VIAN. I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. It's all of the little 'extras' that make HL so special.

One note on NPCs shooting you. I assume you are referring to Barney the security guard. Do you mean he still shoots at enemy targets even if you cross his line of fire? Or do you mean he targets and attacks you purposely? He's programmed to do that if you shoot him (even by accident). He would yell out some funny one-liners when he attacked, as well, like "What do you want on your tombstone?" just like the pizza ads :)

Yeah, the Half Life levels definitely had *something* that few games have.
Damn moody, even stuff that should be boring isn't for some reason.
Say "On Rails", just thinking about it, that whole series of levels should have been boring, a dull basement where you pretty much just fight to keep a train rolling, but for some reason, it's awesome anyway.

If you get into his line of fire, he will hit you, but if he's killed the enemy, and then you get into his line of fire, he still keep shooting. After 3 shot, I bolted.

The only thing I disliked about HL was the constant loading screens. It always seemed like it was every 50 feet or so.

I only played HL so that I wasn't confused while playing HL2. It was fun, but I like HL2 waaaay more than HL1.

I still would likely not play each through again, though.

Yeah...but nowadays, those loading screens are literally like one second long. It's the HL2 loading screens that get ya.

Yeah, I remember those in HL2...they were gross.

Good post VIAN.

I played a ton of HL deathmatch back in the day and even more TFC. I still love that old engine. I should fire it up tonight just for kicks :)

Check out the new teaser trailer

HL1 never looked so good...these guys are doing some very high quality work

I definitely want to play it when they are done. I may even have my HL disks around somewhere if they need that too.

Does anybody know if you can get HL:Source if you have the original HL code?

No, you still have to purchase it, but last time I checked, it was only $9.99

I'd love to play this conversion as well ... the co-op mode would be a blast! Site bookmarked for further perusal at home.

I just found out that there was an expansion pack to Half-life that I never knew about. It's called Decay and it was released for the PS2. WTF!

Not only is it difficult to get any story from HL2, but now you release parts of the story elsewhere. Gearbox completely ignores the PC users here. BS.
