Hey again everybody. First: I never give away major plot points to a movie that aren't obvious from commercials and such themselves, so rest easy in that at least in my post, you won't get too much revealed to you.
Cast: Milla Jovovich of The Fifth Element fame, but she looks a LOT better in this flick. Michelle Rodriguez of similar The Fast and the Furious infamy. Others: Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes and Colin Salmon.
Synopsis: I'm going to skip most of the regular background information that I'd usually give right here, because it's more fun to find out as the movie goes along - they do a great job revealing bits and pieces at a time. If you've played the game, you know who your enemy will be. But - there will be commandos of the black ninja-suited kind. And they will be on one nightmare of a mission.
Good points? The first half or so of the movie runs along excellently. We, the audience, are informed of the situation in an only-what-you-need-to-know sort of way, but almost everything makes perfect sense by the end. Almost everything - you can't really ask for better than that in a movie based on a series of computer games. Milla is in sexy, fine form. For the length of the movie, she's either wearing:
A) Nothing. But you can't see anything.
B) A slinky, wet red dress.
C) A paper-thin hospital gown.
Not only that, she's skilled. I hate this expression, but the proper term is "mad skillz".
So what else? Music and sound, excellent. I'll be looking into the soundtrack to this movie after this post, because it rawked. They also pull off building up tension and shocking you fairly well, but considering you KNOW it's a horror type of movie, it's hard to be too surprising. One thing I'm always saying is that in movies with big name stars, there's never any tension. I mean, what kind of producer would kill off Wesley Snipes at the end of Blade II? This movie is different - anyone can die at any second! I love unpredictability in a movie. 😀
Now for the bad. I didn't like Michelle Rodriguez to begin with and I liked her even less at the end of this movie. What the hell is with her face? She's got to have more expressions to use than one scrunched up 'GRRRRR' bad girl look. Her one-liners are worse than terrible - they're recockulous. I know they needed somebody for the token lone girl in a commando squad role, but anyone except her would have made this an easier film to watch. The movie also gets to be a bit of a bore halfway through...watching unending gunfire with no real result has that effect on a person.
Other negatives: The computer's one-liners were as cliched as they come. Where have we seen the evil A.I. girl with a British accent schtick before? I don't remember, but wherever they did it, they do it worse here. Otherwise, I have no issues with RE. Let's then do a quick round up as usual...
Action = It's an action movie and Milla is going to show us her moves! Lots of gunplay though with little result, but there is one scene where the majority of the commando team runs into a tiny bit of trouble that people will definitely remember this movie by. That was awesome.
Nudity = A little on Milla's end. Nothing to write home about.
Plot = Lifted from a computer game, but sometimes simple just works. That's the case here.
Acting = There was no time for acting in between blasts from the team's automatic weapons and pistols. As should be. 🙂
Bottom line. Not a terrible movie to take a girl to, because it's not too scary or over-the-top gory to watch - but they'll definitely be clenching your arm at the squeeze points. A fast-paced action/horror movie that feeds you bits of information about what's going on at a time and Milla is very watchable on the big screen. 😀 It's no movie event, but I feel my $12+ was well spent on this one.
Official sully rating (between -4 and 12): Objectively a 7, but if you're a fan of the game series (the movie does NOT follow along with the storyline of any of the games, as far as I know) or have a thirst to give a little jump in shock every once in a while, we can slide it up to an 8. Rock on RE!
