What? The VelociRaptor, Savvio, etc. aren't HDD?????

I guess that says something about bit-tech...

Fastest 1TB drive on the market - I don't think we shall see a Raptor in 1TB configuration for a while yet.

Those results show the firmware is optimized for desktop performance.

Kind of a moot point these days as the enthusiast usually run SSD for their OS and use these drives for storage. In this case you buy for price not performance.

That is not the quoted text.

I could say that it was quoted out of context - but if you read the article (you did read before commenting?) & saw the numerous tests run in HD Tach, FC Test & Windows boot time where it actually beats the VelociRaptor, it could be argued that it is indeed a faster hardrive.

Yeah I couldn't agree more, it's odd timing for this to come out now. A paring of SSD and a large low power-low cost storage drive is currently the optimal configuration for most enthusiasts and weekend warrior PC users / gamers. The average joe at the retail desk will only pick up whatever is cheapest on the shelf too, so unless this drive is cheaper than a Western Digital Green... kinda hard to place where it will do well.

I'm all for faster hard drives in any form; just had to say my 0.02 since Rubycon hit it on the head and summed up what I wanted to say too.

EDIT: To clarify - the above assumes you own an SSD. The Green remark is intended for people who aren't enthusiasts or gamers; people who just go to the store and buy whatever is advertised. To them, it's simply price and size (cost per GB) over performance.

Not really, the green drive is for storage. Everything and anything you run should be on the SSD, but all your downloads, your music, your videos, and what-have-you goes onto the storage drive.

This is all assuming you have an SSD to pair with a storage drive. If you don't have an SSD, then I guess this is where the F3/Black comes in.

What SSD would you recommend if someone had 1.5TB worth of games installed and wanted to clone it over onto one?

In that case? Absolutely nothing then.

My hats off to them, I've never had more than 7 games installed in my computer at any time. Even my MAME setup doesn't come close.

fyi, someone said 'terrible green drives.' I bought a WD black caviar and a green WD and the performance is *very* similar. I'd say within 5 to 10%. For storage of your big media and other things, I'm going to buy another green; runs cooler, quieter. Maybe the black has other advantages...but I was very surprised by the performance of the WD green 1TB.

After reading all the tests, I'd still take a VR.

Topic Summary: Fastest 1TB drive in the market (for now)

If the upcoming WD1001FASS is faster than F3 in:

Random Access Time (HD Tach 3.0)
Random Read Speed (Iometer)
Random Read Response Time (average)
Random Read Response Time (Maximum)
Random Write Speed
Random Write Response Time (average)
Random Write Response Time (Maximum)
Random Combined Read & Write Speed
Random Combined Read/Write Response Time (Average)
Random Combined Read/Write Response Time (Maximum)

and close to the other tests, i will choose the WD1001FASS.

Regarding VR, overall it is a better drive than F3.

Indeed, and I wouldn't argue that the F3 was a faster hardrive; my initial post was made in defence of the Bit-Tech team after Chai's remark :)

Not bad but... Cheetah 15k.7 has a minimum sequential read speed that is like the F3's max... then again, not really comparable on price and only 600GB.

The nice thing about performance numbers like the F3's is that you can have a single drive capable of saturating a full 1 Gbps link.

1 Gbps sounds nice. Doubt many people will be able to get it yet anytime soon though. Sure a few lucky few will but it will take forever to become a standard.

1Gbps = ~125MB/s... other than my cheapo netbook, everything has a GigE port these days. Plus, most decent boards will have dual GigE ports than you can link, and switches supporting that aren't that expensive.

Then again in places like S. Korea and Japan $40/mo buys you a 1gbps WAN connection.

Tests were made in the article comparing the F3 against the VelociRaptor, for you to then comment "what, the VelociRaptor...ain't HDD??" pointing out how you had not even read the article. That was the point I was making. Please keep your personal insults to yourself, I was just playing devil's advocate.
