Here's what I've decided to go with you guys. I don't think I'm missing anything... I've ommited stupid things like the mouse, keyboard, game controller, et cetera....

[*] ANTEC Performance PLUS Model PLUS1080- with Antec Original TRUE P4 Power Supply 430Watt

[*] Lite On 32x12x40 CDRW Model LTR-32123S Retail Box (No media supports 40x write anyways)

[*] MITSUMI D359M3 FDD 1.44MB 3.5INCH - OEM (Who cares)

[*] MAXTOR 60GB 7200RPM Model # 6L060J3 -D740X OEM, DRIVE ONLY (Should I go for the Quiet model?)

[*] Samsung Original DDR333 PC-2700 512mb CAS2.5 - OEM (Should I get 2x 256 sticks instead?)

[*] Gigabyte GA-7VRXP VIA KT333 5P1A3D RAID LAN RETAIL (Chose this over the A7V333... good choice?)

[*] NETGEAR FA311 ETHERNET NETWORK CARD 10/100 MBPS PCI - OEM (Need this for my Qwest DSL)

[*] AMD Athlon XP 1800+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL (The retail HSF is fine since I'm not o/c'ing)

[*] Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition - OEM Full Version (should I go for the Pro version?)

[*] CREATIVE LABS SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY WITH 1394 - OEM

[*] Creative Labs Inspire 4.1 4400 (Don't really need huge bass, so these are fine)

[*] VGA LEADTEK|GF4 TI4600 128M DVI/TV RETAIL BOX (Leadtek + nVidia = teh win)

Comment and criqitue, please -- thanks guys!

It looks pretty good. For the memory, it's up to you, 1X512 but is better from an upgrader's point of view. For the case, it is a pretty good choice if you don't want to access your drives often because the door can be a PITA. If it's your case, you should look for the 880 which has the same PSU but has 2 places to put fans in front of the case (as opposed to 1 in the 1080) and it comes without the door. The price to pay for this is that you have less bays. For the HDD, it seems good but instead of going to a quiet Maxtor, I suggest to look for Seagate Barracuda IV drives. They are near silent but are a little slower than Maxtor's. For XP, I personally own the Pro version but if you don't use the features of the Pro, why pay for it... Many persons here will recommand you to go for a TB Santa Cruz soundcard instead of the Audigy but I haven't tried them so I cannot express my point of view on this.

I hope it will be helpful !

It looks like a good setup. I would go with the quiet model of the Maxtor since it is only a few dollars more. I might get a different ethernet adapter. I like realtek cards because they are supported by almost all OS's right out of the box. Personally, Windows 2000 is my favorite Microsoft OS's ever. If you do want to go the XP route, then don't worry about getting the Pro version, it offers nothing worthwhile to normal users. If I only had $50 to spend on speakers, I would probably get a set of Logitechs over Creative speakers. The only good speakers that Creative makes are in its Cambridge line. If you want the best sound for the money, then you may want to get some headphones. Sony MDR-V6 headphones offer a lot of bang for the buck. They run about $60. I also think that a Ti4400 is money much better spent. You'll save $100 and take a very minimal performance hit. That's about all I can think of. Have fun with your system!

Nice setup. Ditch the 4600 for the 4400 on the vid card and upgrade the memory to a CAS 2-2-2 stick, you'll get extra performance due to the lower latency without the overclock.🙂

I'd suppose he wants to have one for his DSL modem and the other for his internal network.

I have the 1080 case and it's sweet. I would also go with the Ti4400 cause you could overclock it to a Ti4600 level easily. I would look at the 1900+ cause it's really cheap right now. The rest is pretty good too. I would go with the 40x burner myself, but that's just me(not much diff in price). Overall a pretty nice system that you will like alot.

I don't really mind if I have to wait a whole extra minute or two for my 32x burner... 40x burners are for people with no patience😉

I could downgrade the video card to 4400 and upgrade the speakers to Z560's... is that a better choice than the 4600 w/Inspires?

Ok guys, I have some choices:

1.) If I downgrade to a Leadtek 4400 (and lose a whole 3.5FPS in Quake3!!!) I can upgrade the speakers to Z560's and the processor to a 1900+

2.) Or, I can downgrade to a Leadtek 4400, keep the inspires, upgrade the CPU to a 1900+, and throw in a 256 stick of ram (so I'll have one 512 and one 256... that makes 768)

3.) Kill myself

- unless you plan to do a lot of 3DS Max and Photoshop work, 512MB of RAM will be just fine; take the better speakers over the extra 256MB of RAM.

Actually, I think I'll go with the Asus A7V333 (non RAID) due to the nice POST features and of course the CPU Overheat Protection... is this a good move?

wait... extra comment!
When you hear the bass on the Logitecs, you won't want to go back!
(I have the z-340s and love the sound of the 560s, I might be upgrading)

I just received the z560s from Newegg yesterday and after a solid day of playing Morrowind, I can't get over how good they sound for a measely 130 bucks. I mean no one will mistake them for a pair of MartinLogans and they are a bit bass heavy (I've got the bass knob turned nearly all the way down) but for the price they are hard to fault.

Remember, if option 1 doesn't work out you can still choose option 3 at no added cost.

I agree, go with a Mac. They're cute and stuff. And OSX looks neat! And.. umm.. that's about it, really. But it'd be a sound investment. 😉

Oh.. and if you wanna stay PC, I'd recommend option 1. You won't use 768mb RAM unless ya do heavy photoshop or 3d modeling or something.
