I know that there are item reviews in the main site, and people giving individual equipment opinions on the forum, but there does not seem to be any consolidated. indexed and easily searched place to find specifics.

Whether it is electronic gear, hardware, or stuff like musical instruments and photo equipment, some way to categorize, rate and provide specs for teh equipment might bring in more people just looking for information about a particular product that may not have been reviewed on Newegg, Amazon or any consolodated price matching website.

Possibly a web page/forum hybrid would be in order, where the stats are given just like at a Mfr's site, but then specific reviews by users are given (akin to something like Beer Advocate).

Each reviewer then builds a rep by what people think of their reviews (based on information provided and how clinical and detailed tehy get). The better the rep, the sooner their reviews can be seen if that sorting option is chosen. (granted, you would need to have some way of sorting the persons rep in some general categories/product lines. SOmeone with a good rep on Beer might not be the best Photo Editing Software expert).

So say that Bob has a great recod with Cameras. You go to look at the Canon 50D and hit "sort by reputation" and his review, if he gave one, would be near the top.

Direct links to Anandtech articles could also be included on the initial top bar so that they can be accesses easily if available....

Just a thought.

I see some interesting technical hurdles that would need to be jumped, but that is a cool idea.

Possibly, I would have to look.

The thing here is to not only make everybody happy with something they can expouse no, but bring more people in to look at what was written. There is a LOT of knowledge lurkinga round here, and that knowledge can make money just by having other people LOOK at it (ad revenue).

If there was a way to let people contribute where they wanted to, and still make money off of it (possibly LOWERING the number of ads needed to maintain the site) all would benefit....
