Reversing a Windows Update driver update?

Hello all,

I've got an ASUS P5Q Deluxe motherboard; it has two SATA controllers, the Intel one and a Marvell one. Windows Update installed a driver update for the Marvell controller that is acting up. If I try booting Windows with the controller enabled in the BIOS, it hangs at the Windows loading screen. The colors come up, but Windows eventually [normally] turns on the keyboard lights, S/PDIF output [produces an audible noise] etc. This never happens, the Windows colors just keep cycling, for hours.

If I disable the Marvell SATA controller in the BIOS, Windows starts just fine. This started exactly after Windows Update installed the new driver.

I tried reinstalling the ASUS supplied drivers [which were working fine :\], both using their installer and extracting it and right clicking on the INF; the problem persists if I re-enable the controller in the BIOS.

Is there anyway to reverse the update? I disabled the controller when it started acting up, but now I need an old file on that drive. It [driver from Windows Update] doesn't show up in Add/Remove, and the device obviously isn't showing up in Device Manager because it's disabled [so no "Roll Back" option]. I'm not exactly sure how to go about hunting down the actual file and deleting it. I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64.

Thanks.

You should be able to enable the controller in the bios and then when windows is booting hit F8 to get into safe mode.

One in safe mode go into device manager and right click on the marvel controller and go to the driver tab. There should be a button for roll back driver. let it roll back and you should be fine.

If that does not work you can use system restore, again from safe mode, to restore back before the windows updates where installed

You can also try:

In programs and features you can uninstall windows updates if you know specifically what update it was (view installed updates).

Hope that helps.

Safe mode hangs all the same. I could system restore, but per your signature, I am a procrastinator. This was months ago and I can't afford to system restore.

Driver updates installed via Windows Update do not show up there :\

Running the inf might not force the Drivers if the current drivers are suppose to be Updated, try this way.

From an Admin account.

In the Device Manager, right click on the Device

Click on Update Drivers, and choose the Browse my computer for drivers,

Choose let me pick from a list , Click on Have a Disk and point to the folder with the Drivers unzipped drivers.

This hopefully will override the Update drivers and should force the Asus drivers.

:\

Can't get the device in Device Manager because it's disabled in the BIOS; enabling it causes Windows not to boot (even in safe mode).

You could try this folder, I remember there being a folder where windows keeps all the updates, just don't remember where.

might be this...
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Going to try this, thanks

It is also possible to uninstall a Windows update. Using Explorer, got to /WINDOWS and see the total list of updates in blue. Go to the one that fits your date. Click on it and then find the UNINST folder for that update.

You could still try a system restore, as long as you did not turn it off, windows updates makes one before installing any windows updates, if you boot off the install media it gives you an option to repair after selecting the language, on the bottom left it gives you an option for Repair Your Computer.

Select that, select your windows install, cancel the start up repair, select advanced repair options and select the system restore option

other methods like system restore are just dirty and will haunt you.

Only if you go too far back, and its alot better than it was in xp, which I really hated to used, but win7 i've uses it a few time on my machine and laptop with no issues
