Reverse first-world problems: What *good* thing happened to you today?

I still have all my fingers! I was one handing my top handle saw today which isn't a great practice in the first place, and I was getting careless on top of that. I was cutting up dead limbs that were on the ground, holding them in one hand, and cutting with the other. I hit a small branch, and the saw jumped, and went into my left glove. I could /just/ feel the steel brush my skin. Take off the glove, and nothing. Not even a scratch. Got a hole in my old harborfreight glove, but it was a pair that's almost ready for the trash anyway. Aside from being stupid, it was a pretty good day :^D

Yikes. Close calls are always an eye opener to be more careful.

Was cutting small blocks of wood with the mitre saw, small ends which meant my hands were closer to the blade than I'd like so I can hold it in place. All was fine until the block of wood got caught and it pulled my hand in. I let go but that could have ended badly. When I need to cut a small piece of wood that I can't grip far from the blade I just use a handsaw now.

^ Miter and table saws are great ways to lose digits. I've done the same with my miter saw -- cut boards with my fingers an inch or two from the blade. Always makes my butthole pucker up while I'm doing it.

Yea, shit can get out of control really quickly. I did the same thing years ago with a machete, but wasn't quite as lucky. Kept my fingers still, but lost a glove, and had to go get a bunch of stitches. I'd love to have an old buzz saw for doing that kind of work. I definitely need to think up a different process. It's the little stuff that's a problem. A bit too big to just break over a knee, but too small to properly cut on the ground. I might be able to rig a circular saw on a table, and just keep it running, and stick the wood in that with my fingers away from the blade.

Bit into something very hard when eating a burger today. Now I'm worried I may have damaged a tooth as I do have a bit of pain in that area. Not sure what that thing was as I was trying to chew around it so I can then take it out of my mouth but ended up swallowing it. I'm hoping it was just food related product and not metal or something like that. Hopefully it didn't actually do any damage.

Not quite free, but that's not the idea. I hate having any kind of dental work done, it's just not a very fun experience, not to mention it has permanent effects. (fillings wear out over time etc). So I'm hoping I have no damage. I think I'm ok though as I would feel lot of pain when eating if there was really a crack. It's at least 6 months before I can get in anyway so I'll be due for my checkup before that. My dentist is always super booked.

Edit: Just realized I posted this in the wrong thread. 😛 Was suppose to be a first world problem.

I guess the positive note is that I live in a place with decent medical care where they can do this sort of thing with proper technology. 😛 If I was in like Africa or something it would be with manual tools and no anesthetic.

Somebody dumped construction debris on a lot owned by the company I work for. We were pretty sure a local waste removal outfit (two brothers) did it but knowing and proving are two different things. Then we found a flyer for the outfit with a picture showing the brothers unloading a truck… on our land. Our lawyers sent the gentlemen a nice letter as soon as they could keep their shit together long enough to write it. 😀😛😀

Bought a brushcutter today; an echo srm410u. Been looking on amazon for different blades for it, then made an order after carefully considering everything I needed from amazon. Forgot the main fucking blade I wanted to get after submitting my order :^S The blade I wanted had free shipping by itself, so I didn't have to contrive other "necessities" to make a second order. That *never* happens. I'm the big winner today!

Nah, it came on the radio station my mother listened to. I think it was the story that caught my attention. My first albums I owned myself(and enjoyed) were The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, and an English compilation import of the Beachboys. My brother also gave me a Captain Beefheart album(I think, vague memory) which I *didn't* appreciate at the time. I'd like to hear whatever it was again just to check it out.

Not exactly today but I got a new phone Friday. Went from a Galaxy S8+ to a Galaxy 10. I didn't really *need* to get a new one, but I was eligible and my monthly payment only goes up $2 so f it. I'm a baller anyway (I throw pennies away). Haven't dived too deep into the phone yet but holy cow is the camera impressive. It's so far better than my big Fujifilm camera it's not even funny (granted that's over a decade old lulz).

Side note I went back into Verizon Saturday cause my mom had been trying to call me Friday night but it just kept ringing and ringing, and nothing came through on my end (no missed calls or anything). So I wanted to make sure everything was ok with it. I mentioned that I almost always kept Mobile Data off with so many places having Wifi cause with such a low data plan (I share a 3 GB plan with my brother) I didn't wanna go over. They seemed pretty surprised and said that I should have Mobile Data on all the time. So while I never had a problem doing that on my S8+ I've mostly kept it on with this phone, although from what I gather if you have both Mobile Data and Wifi enabled it'll use Wifi (if you have a valid connection), which is definitely good if true.

I got a new laptop at work yesterday. Dell Precision 7530. Intel Xeon E-2176M, 512GB M2 SSD, 32GB DDR4 RAM, Nvidia Quadro P3200. It's about half the size of my old laptop which was still running well, but work has started implementing a laptop upgrade program. It has a really nice heft to it.

I got to brag to everyone in the R&D department, as I now have the best PC in the lab, but pretty soon everyone will be upgraded to the same one. 😎

The only downside is all new laptops at work are using Windows 10, so I have to use a VM for a legacy program we still use. I'm gonna have IT install Classic Shell since I hate the Windows 10 Start Menu.

So this is kinda bittersweet but the NOC we transfer some duties to at night got like 7 layoffs today. Sucks to see people lose their jobs, but the good news I guess is... it's not us. Also, we no longer will be transferring those night duties to them, we'll be doing it full time now. More work for us. Some coworkers are bitching about it, but I figure it's better for job security and it also simplifies everything for everybody such as techs we work with as now we will be the single point of contact at all times of the day.

The other good news is that they posted the job opening to replace the person that passed away last year. We've been short staffed for a while now. Can't use floaters or banked time because there's never enough coverage.

I always have that slight worry that they start cutting us, as our job is not really that hard to automate/relocate, but this is a good reassurance that it's not in the plans at least not any time soon. If I lost my job I'd pretty much have to put my house on the market that day and hope it sells within a month or I'd have to declare bankrupcy. Costs of living are just too high I don't have enough money to save for an emergency fund.

There's a property not far from here in an unorganized township, it's not lake front, but I'm seriously considering it, as I could actually live there and still work as it's not that far. Most of these types of properties tend to be like an hour away so it would only really serve as a camp ground and not a place to live while I am working. I do need to start considering a way to reduce my costs of living though as it's not good to be living on the edge like this all the time.

At very least I should secure the property and throw a camper on it. If I DO lose my job I could still go live there. Sell the house, and use the money to buy any equipment needed such as snow plow to make it winter livable.
