The Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917 (40 Stat. 411, enacted 6 October 1917, codified at 12 U.S.C. § 95a et seq.), sometimes abbreviated as TWEA, is a United States federal law to restrict trade with countries hostile to the United States. The law gives the President the power to oversee or restrict any and all trade between the U.S. and its enemies in times of war. In 1933 the U.S. Congress amended the act by the passage of the Emergency Banking Relief Act which extended its scope regarding the hoarding of gold to include any declared national emergency and not just those declared solely during times of war. President Franklin D. Roosevelt then used these new authorities to essentially outlaw gold ownership through the issuance of Executive Order 6102. These restrictions continued until January 1, 1975. The Act has been amended several other times.[1]
The Trading with the Enemy Act is often confused with the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which grants somewhat broader powers to the President and is invoked during states of emergency when not at war.
As of 2008, Cuba is the only country restricted under the act. North Korea is the most recent country to have the restrictions lifted.[2]
FDR didn't seize those powers at the point of a bayonet now did he?
Congress gave them to him specifically so that he could do what he did.
Its the truth. fdr was a tyrant, he ordered people to give up their gold which is wrong
As usual, Righties illustrate a poor understanding of economics, particularly the role of money & credit. With the ongoing collapse of credit & banking, Roosevelt inherited a debt/deflation scenario exacerbated by hoarding of both gold & currency by the wealthy. And, of course, the more they hoarded, the worse it got, and the worse it got, the more they hoarded. Those with excess purchasing power gained even more of it by stuffing their money into their mattresses, driving prices & wages through the floor.
More money needed to be created to counter act that, but the govt was constrained by the gold standard. Buying all the gold in the country at $20 and revaluing it at $35 allowed that to happen, allowed the govt to employ millions of people & create the massive public works projects that benefit us to this day.
Who lost? Only the hoarders, who remained rich in any case. Who gained? Everybody else.
What other kinda of talk would you expect from a demon leader. Revenge I cry . Its Revenge . So whats revenge are we talking about . 12 % of the blacks vote revenge over a 170 year old slavery issue . What revenge is he talking about .
"Voting is the best revenge." - Obama
WTF?
Yep. Too bad his first 100 days in office didn't look like FDR's first 100 days. If it had, we'd be on our way out of this economic mess, and the 2010 election never would have come out the way it did.
Dems dithered in the face of a crisis, exactly the wrong thing to do. In such circumstances, people want strong leadership & direction, even if it turns out to be wrong somewhere down the road. The electorate would have embraced a new New Deal, but got business as usual instead.
