Good article by Bruce Bartlett on his travails in the Conservative world, for what he felt was speaking truth. Can Republicans ever become a national party again if they don't start living in a fact-based world?

http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/revenge-of-the-reality-based-community/

At least a few conservatives now recognize that Republicans suffer for epistemic closure. They were genuinely shocked at Romney’s loss because they ignored every poll not produced by a right-wing pollster such as Rasmussen or approved by right-wing pundits such as the perpetually wrong Dick Morris. Living in the Fox News cocoon, most Republicans had no clue that they were losing or that their ideas were both stupid and politically unpopular.
I am disinclined to think that Republicans are yet ready for a serious questioning of their philosophy or strategy. They comfort themselves with the fact that they held the House (due to gerrymandering) and think that just improving their get-out-the-vote system and throwing a few bones to the Latino community will fix their problem. There appears to be no recognition that their defects are far, far deeper and will require serious introspection and rethinking of how Republicans can win going forward. The alternative is permanent loss of the White House and probably the Senate as well, which means they can only temporarily block Democratic initiatives and never advance their own.

The Dems smartened up 40 years ago when they were in the same situation.

Requires going back to the real grass roots, rebuilding and also fully exploiting the weakness/arrogance of the opponent.

40 years ago the Dems didn't have a self-reinforcing hate machine they needed to break out of.

Rasmussen actually called for a close race and said he had no idea where people like Morris were getting idea Romney would win in a blowout.

Romney lost because he was a weenie. He ran a political equivalent of a prevent defense. He avoided the line of scrimmage and gave up lots of yardage trying to defend against the home run ball. On offense he avoided taking risks and tried to dink and dunk while eating up the clock. He thought just Obama's miserable record on economy would win the day. He failed to realize how much the American public had deteriorated and were voting llke a third world country with a charismatic fixation on a person who played to their resentments and absolved them of any blame in their lives.

Romney was playing a squeaky Mr Peepers to Obama's Barabbas. Romney should have attacked Obama for his overt communism and indoctrinated adherence to a failed ideology that is anti-American at the core as well as inclined to tyranny. Like McCain, Romney was obsessed with reminding people Obama was a "nice guy" instead of the lying, two faced dirt-bag he is. A person has to be real psychotic to think Obama is going to be good for America. He's the best thing that ever happened to US enemies as Pravda pointed out this week. He set the ME on fire helping Muslim Brothers and Al Qaeda. THAT's reality ...

"Recently, Obama has been re-elected for a 2nd term by an illiterate society and he is ready to continue his lies of less taxes while he raises them. He gives speeches of peace and love in the world while he promotes wars as he did in Egypt, Libya and Syria. He plans his next war is with Iran as he fires or demotes his generals who get in the way"

Mind blown.
You are actually claiming Obama is a Communist and are quoting Pravda to prove it.

Perhaps a brain transplant is what you need.

I can't tell if you're serious or not, but in any case it's certainly an argument some conservatives are making..."Romney wasn't conservative/tough enough." And it certainly sounds good, since it means Republicans don't have to change anything, they can blame everything on the candidate. Except so far I haven't seen much evidence to suggest the parts of the Republican party that have the most appeal are calling Democrats communists and calling Democratic voters "takers".

I don't think the Republican party is in as much trouble as some people think. Clearly their general ideas have some significant appeal, just not enough this particular time given the way it was presented and who was doing the presenting. What WILL sink them though is if they listen to people saying the solution to their problems is to move even farther into ridiculous extremist territory. Imagine if Democrats have come away from their last electoral loss and decided their new strategy was to openly embrace communism. That would have been pretty stupid, right...?

Republican Party needs to be washed in Tea til there's nothing left at a national level. Then we can replace any semblance of their platform with forthright secession.

My admittedly faulty memory tells me he is a genuine idiot, the real thing we see in his post face value. There is just no telling these morons how moronic they are.

Someone's idea of reality, in any case. I agree that Mr. Romney should have gone down this path - it would have made for terrific entertainment, and the most lopsided victory for Mr. Obama in the history of the United States.
