BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A cameraman for Reuters in Iraq has been ordered by a secret tribunal to be held without charge in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison until his case is reviewed within six months, a U.S. military spokesman said on Wednesday.

Ali Omar Abrahem al-Mashhadani was arrested by U.S. forces on August 8 after a search of his home in the city of Ramadi. The U.S. military has refused Reuters requests to disclose why he is being held. He has not been charged.

His brother, who was detained with him and then released, said they were arrested after Marines looked at the images on the journalist's cameras.

"The CRRB has determined that Mr. Mashhadani remains a threat to the people of Iraq and they recommended continued internment," Lieutenant Colonel Guy Rudisill said, referring to a hearing of the Iraqi-U.S. Combined Review and Release Board held at a secret location in Baghdad on Monday.

Hmm...why would an innocent Reuters cameraman be held in Abu Ghraib and denied water and told he could be held for up to 6 months with no recourse?

Hmmm...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/4202186.stm
...Waleed Khaled appears to have been fired on without any warning. He leaves behind a wife who is four months pregnant and a seven-year-old daughter.

The Reuters cameraman with him was injured and, although the main witness to what had happened, he was promptly arrested by the Americans.

Before he was taken away, the cameraman was able to tell colleagues what had occurred.

When an American journalist working for Reuters, managed to get to the scene with a British security adviser, he found the Americans laughing and joking around Waleed's body.

They were also refusing to give the injured cameraman any water.

The security adviser - a former British soldier - said it was apparent to him that the American troops wanted to clear away any evidence before there could be an outside inquiry.

He said what was most worrying was that the unit did not seem to care that they had shot dead an innocent civilian.

The American military authorities say their investigations are continuing.

Beautiful.

Negroponte-style warfare.

Bring our troops home NOW!

Instead of bringing your troops home just get the republicans out of office.

Bush entered that country on your behalf and i would think even less of americans if you pulled out just now.

As I've said before, our troops are not over there in numbers large enough to secure any city, much less the entire country. In fact, right now, yet another operation is going on in al Qaim (the same location where Lima Company was devastated just a couple of months ago.)

The missions are akin to whack-a-mole and only setup our troops to be targets for the insurgents and the terrorists.

We are of no benefit staying in Iraq.

But, none of that changes the apparent fact that an innocent cameraman is being held against his will simply for being witness to what may have been murder, at the least was a horrible accident attempted to be covered up.

There is more than meets the eyes. Do you actually think the military wants to waste their time holding innocent people? If so you are dumber than I thought.

Is this directed at me? If so, I'm not sure why. I believe we're on the same page.

We are not on the same page. I am in Iraq and I see sh*t on a daily basis. I haven't seen hardly any "News" reports get much of anything right. This "camera" man needs to be held and is going to be held because he isn't "innocent"

Like I said, you know nothing about what is going on in Iraq. You base your opinion on media stories that aren't even close to describing the situation over here. I was totally ignorant of the situation over here until I arrived a little over a month ago. I had my vision of life over here but nothing you think is probably anywhere correct.

Every heard of having a little faith in our troops? I have heard through the grapevine what is going on with the "camera" guy but if I say what the deal is, I have no proof. However, I value what I hear over here than what these new agencies have to say.

EDIT: Wanna know my opinion on things? I think that we are releasing too many of these fvckheads back into the wild when we know they are guilty. The media and wussy americans have tied our hands over here. We are capturing these jerk offs repeatedly only to release them because we can't prove enough to keep them.

Hell and I am not even military. We are hog tieing our military so they can't do their job here.

Like I said, you show your ignorance.......

Keep living in your dream world that our soldiers provide for you. It suits you well.

I don't have time for this. I just happened to see your thread and read it. Realized it was a bunch of crap.

Just remember for everything 1 thing bad you hear out of iraq in the news, there were 50 things positive that happened that day.

blah blah blah

Why did you even come in here? You haven't posted ONE SINGLE piece of useful information. Just subtle hints of innuendo.

Begone with thee.

Please share them with us. If it's going so well, why are people blowing up at markets, why are we still there? Do you travel around Baghdad without escorts? I'm sure you have no bias and it's all great. I think I'll believe the reporters and not some anonymous Internet guy with no proof.

PS. I have no opinion on the OT, I don't know enough about it.

"50 things positive happened that day." High comedy at its finest.

The gangsters running Abu Ghraib are a known entity; they are rapest, murders, thugs and perverts. They know nothing.

This is a Reuters cameraman not an insurgent.

Sounds like the heat is getting to you.

Yeah, because they still run it... I am sure that the current staff (of whom none have been accused of anything) would think that you are a STUPID MORON.

I agree, don't attack the current guards at the prisons. If this guy is innocent you should only blame the ones who locked him up, not who guard the cells.

Since I am on my 6 hours of off time, I can reply now. Where do I start, if there is any question about where I am at, the mods are more than welcome to take a look at the logs. I am not sure what my ip in my trailer reports as but earlier I was at work and I know it will come back as a military address in Iraq.

On to it. Jeff please take a look at your local news. How many feel good stories do they report? If they are like 90% of the countries new stations, they don't report feel good stories. They report about that gang shotting down the street or the killing someone in your town. If you only knew of the news that is reported in your local town I would get you would think it is a hopeless town.

The same principle is happening here in Iraq. Yeah there are some really bad spots in Iraq. Baghdad, Mosul, and Fallujah. Mosul used to be a really nice area. Until we kicked most of the insurgents asses and they ran to Mosul. Now it is infested.

There are tons of areas in Iraq that are peaceful without insurgents.

We are also doing a lot of good over here. Do you have any idea how out of date people are here? Some of the locals when shown an ATM call it the wall that spits out money. We are fighting a battle of ignorance and a small group of fanatical idiots that hate they have lost power in this country.

Enough of the lecture. What you simply don't understand until you get here is the real situation. Two months ago I sat in the states and I thought I understood the situation in Iraq. It is just a fact that what you see on the news isn't a reality. Yes it is dangerous and we are far from winning but if you only look at the bad side of the issues then yeah this sucks.

You have to look at the whole picture and I am sad to say that I don't think Americans are getting the whole picture through the news.

Believe me or not, I don't really care. I can't make you understand. I am here living it. I know what it is like here in Iraq. You don't.

You're even dumber if you think our military isn't infested with pieces of sh1t, from the grunts who shoot a cameraman who saw something he shouldn't have, straight to the top with our "honorable" Commander In Chief.

Take a look at Abu Ghraib if you want proof of their existence.

Our military has some bad apples but that is the case everywhere. You comments about the soldiers shooting the cameraman are uninformed.

Bad things happen in situations like this. I never claimed they don't But you give ZERO credit for the good we are going.

I can at least see the bad for being bad. I just have open eyes to see the good too.

EDIT: But I forgot you know more about the cameraman sitting on your couch at home than the people who saw the incident......yeah I forgot about that.

US confirms its troops killed Reuters journalist in Iraq
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/MAC162490.htm
BAGHDAD, Sept 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. military confirmed on Thursday that its soldiers killed a Reuters journalist in Iraq but said their action was "appropriate".

Describing Sunday's incident, when television soundman Waleed Khaled was killed by multiple shots, Major General Rick Lynch said: "That car approached at a high rate of speed and then conducted activity that in itself was suspicious. There were individuals hanging outside with what looked to be a weapon.

"It stopped and immediately put itself in reverse. Again suspicious activity. Our soldiers on the scene used established rules of engagement and all the training received ... decided that it was appropriate to engage that particular car.

"And as a result of that the driver was indeed killed and the passenger was hurt by shards of glass."

Reuters cameraman Haider Kadhem, 24, like Waleed an Iraqi, was slightly wounded by flying fragments but survived in the passenger seat of the car, only to be detained for the next three days by U.S. troops. Kadhem was using a small video camera.

Reuters Global Managing Editor David Schlesinger rejected any suggestion that the killing of Waleed was justified.

"The idea that the killing of a professional journalist doing his duty could be justified is repugnant to me," he said.

Lynch, senior spokesman for all U.S.-led forces in Iraq, said the investigation into the incident, by an officer from the army division involved in the shooting, had been concluded.

But a spokesman for the division said the report had not yet been formally completed and was not yet available.

Schlesinger called on the military to release the results of their inquiry as soon as possible so that Reuters could respond fully.

"To come to these conclusions without a full and independent investigation is rash and unwise," he added.

Lynch said soldiers reacted when they saw the car traveling "forward at a high rate of speed".

"That particular car looked like cars that we have seen in the past used as suicide bombs. It wasn't a new car, it was an older model car ... And there were two local nationals inside the car.

"Our soldiers took appropriate measures. We mourn the loss of life of all humans ... But our soldiers are trained to respond in those situations.

"Put yourself in the place of the soldiers, knowing that the insurgents, who have been known to use suicide bombs, suicide car bombs, suicide vests, to attack innocent civilians, will always have an attack and then respond to that attack when the first responders come forward. So our soldiers took appropriate action on that particular case."

Waleed Khaled, 35, had worked for Reuters in Baghdad for two years and was a key member of news teams working in the capital.

He was a much-loved colleague who left a wife who is four-months pregnant and a 7-year-old daughter.

Something smells like rotted flesh.
