Major error in this thread, hell yeah pastrami is great, as is a properly corned beef brisket.

But both are inferior to a corned beef tongue, the best damn deli meat on earth.

36 people don't know their sandwich. Pastrami is indeed the greatest deli meat, ever.

The problem is the moment you use pastrami instead of corned beef it becomes a rachel and not a reuben.

If prepared properly, it's incredible. I believe to corn beef you put it in a tub of vinegar and spices for over a week at room temperature.

After googling pictures it looks much better than how I've seen it prepared by my Filippino ex.

Pretty sure a reuben is corned beef and not pastrami. although this deli near me carries a sandwich that is both reuben and pastrami. double decked it is delicious and way to much food for me to eat in 1 sitting.

I just ate two awesome burgers off of the grill, perfectly cooked to medium rare, and reading this thread, I'm still hungry for corned beef or pastrami. :(

heh, I didn't even read your post.

if you want good Pastrami, you need to drive down to San Carlos and get some Pastrami at The Refuge. It is the best in the world, hands down.

Refuge is good for the bay area, but I still like Katz's better.

I suppose corned beef belongs on a Reuben, but fuck it: pastrami = greatest deli meat of all times. of ALL TIMES!

Agreed
I love corned beef, and a Reuben is corned beef, but shit, Pastrami is like .... even better than bacon!!!

I didn't realize it was a quiz so here's mine
Dark rye, Russian, cooked

The best Reuben I've had was in Chicago
Light, Russian. Semi cooked.

There's a deli I found that uses purple cabbage cole slaw on their reubens. Top notch.

Pastrami is nice but it's like making a hamburger but use pastrami instead thus it's not a true hamburger.
WTF is this fail?

If you uncultured people ever get to NY go to 2nd ave deli and try their pastrami, then mistakes like this won't ever be made again.

Holy crap just googled to see what a "reuben" is, that is a disgusting looking sandwich. I'm curious to try one now though.

It's pretty good...but yeah, it looks pretty bad. If you go to some places, it's oozing with grease. You look at it and just go, "Am I going to die after eating this".

Ha, I reckon it's one of those things that would be perfect after a night of drinking at 3am, like a kebab. Or a local "delicacy" round my way: A battered mars bar.

A real reuben needs corned beef for sure.

It's so unorthodox, but there's a deli around here that makes a spicy turkey "reuben". It's on rye and loaded with cajun turkey, chipotle gouda cheese, coleslaw w/ shredded jalapenos, and russian dressing. Very good.

I also can't stand Russian dressing (fucking mayonaise BS). I always get brown/spicy mustard on mine.

Thousand Island is just brown mayo/"russian dressing."
