I just installed an RMA replacement for my 7900GT from EVGA that wouldn't work right under Vista. For those interested, the thread on that is here although my summary pretty much covers it.

I'm going to migrate to Vista, but for now, under XP Pro, when I return from standby the fan on the GTO runs full bore. I've waited over 10 minutes and it never throttles down.

Is there a fix for this?

A few issues to consider are;

1) I am moving to Vista. Should I see if things change with Vista?

2) I have a Zalman VF900-Cu I can put on. I'm a little intimidated to try it though because of the massive heatpipes and fan on the GTO. But it worked just great on the 7900GT.

3) The card is so massive that it barely fits in my case. There are interference issues with the 6 pin power connector and my HD cage. I'm almost thinking of going with a newer card. Some derivative of the 8600 series. I'm thinking fanless. I'm not much of a gamer, but I like to have my bases covered. Any suggestions? I'm not locked into Nvidia products either.

I hope I'm not asking too many questions here. Any advice would be appreciated. Video cards and issues are one of my weak points.
