Look at the section of the board surrounding the CPU on the old board :

compared to later Asus Premium S775 boards :

The supporting VRM/power delivery/cooling/caps are all vastly improved, some hard lessons were learned in the preceding years. I never saw so many dead/dying boards as in the 2005-2007 timeframe.

I was thinking the same thing when I put this build together lol. It's held together pretty well so far, the only thing that doesn't work is onboard audio and one of the Intel or Marvell controllers. The board also has a ton of annoying vdroop.

4ghz should be a snap on a 955...

i remember i got my smithfield P4 840 to 4.5ghz...
I had to use a ghetto waterblock back in those days... but it did do it.

All hail Netburst with over9000 ghz numbers!!!

Also how u enjoying your space heater??
that p4 generation was THE MOST EFFICIENT HEATER out of all the other intel products...

They couldnt make a better heater!

Hah, I still have a 955x/PentiumD 930 rig running home server at the parents house.

I posted some benches from it a while back in that big CPU benching thread.

It is freaking horrible. An A4 or current Celeron will pummel it for performance.

I just bought two e8500 Core2 CPUs off Ebay today for $35 each... yeah.

Going with a decent SSD should still be good though :)

If the computer is going to be used any significant length of time then the power consumption will factor into the cost.

Just get a laptop

Old people love laptops.

Select all the Intel processors and sort by price. (This will filter out the Intel Atom listings)

Only select the AMD processors if you want to sort through to find one that isn't slow.

I also thought about using my old rig for relatives but the thing guzzles 400w+ constant at the wall.

That's sure to cost more in the long run.
