My biggest pet peeve is when I pay with cash and the cashier hands me a bill and plops all the coins on top of it. It never friggen works, because the coins just end up sliding off the bill and falling on the counter... every time. Who is teaching people to pass cash like this??
It should be coins first, then the bills, everyone knows this.

Count yourself lucky if you actually deal with a cashier that can make change.

And they need to learn how to count change back.

It's not by counting the actual change you are handing back, but to add it back to the amount spent to end at the bill that was presented by the customer.

Or even worse, when they put the bills on bottom, receipt on top of the bills, then plop all the coins on top of that. If the coins are on the bills, I can quickly separate them, but when they put the receipt into the mix I don't want it going into my wallet with the rest of my money.

As a retail employee, I, and the others there, were not trained on how to hand back cash/receipts/coins. So there's your answer, OP - it's not a trained incompetence, just a natural one.

Is it really that hard to grab the middle of the cash so it doesnt fall?

This is what I try to do (sometimes with two hands like a ritard), but the coins seems to always get away. the problem is solved by
1) Pass all coins
2) Pass all bills with reciept.

Math is hard! :(

The local supermarket has an LCD screen that shows the exact quantity of each coin to the cashier so they don't have to think about it.

I pass back the bills and receipt in my left hand, let the customer choose how they want to take that, then the coins in my right, again letting them choose. More than half of them take the whole pile in one hand.

I don't have tiny midget hands like you do, so, I never experience this problem.

Maybe you should use both hands next time?

;-p

anything else?
I wrote this in a hurry because I was peeved. Therefore, multiple err.

Only one question mark, but really, I think we (ATOT) prefers to point the errors out one at a time, to push up the number of edits you have to perform.

The plural of 'error' is 'errors'. A freebie double, since they're in different posts ;)

Stop paying with dirty cash and use debit/cc instead? It will solve your own pet peeve.

I have a 11.5" hand spread (thumb to pinky) - no cabbage smelling, midget hands here - they are regularly covered in oil from working on my car though :hmm:

I agree with this, but for different reasons. When I get handed a pile of bills with the coins on top, I can't quickly put the cash in my wallet and the coins in my pocket.

I agree with this! What I do is when they hand me change, I grab the bills with my left hand and immediately pull that hand away, then hold out my right hand to take the coins. Then I can drop all the coins in my pocket immediately and then put the bills away.

Almost never pay with cash though.

this reason goes VERY much hand in hand with my reason.

thats friggin huge, i have fairly large hands and mine is only 9.5" span

edit: as for the OP, it doesnt really phase me either way. if they drop the coins on the bills, ill slip the bills out with my right hand and drop the change in my back pocket. the bills will end up in my clip thats in front pocket anyway, so it doesnt really matter which hand i hold them in. ive never had any issues with the change falling tho, unless im not paying attention and move my hand quickly before putting my thumb over it all. happens when im drunk as well.

It's always frustrating when they drop the coins on top. I generally have my wallet open in the other hand, ready to insert the bills, but when they pull that I have to do a lot of fancy shifting. It's pretty awkward.
