Retail Boxes: When do you throw them out, if at all?

I have so many boxes from all my "toys" over the years. I have an entire closet in the hallway filled with my old retail boxes. Does anyone else do this or am I just weird? When do you finally throw em out? I guess it would make sense to finally throw em out after the warranty expires, but I usually just forget and end up justifying it somehow.

i throw them out when i know i'm not going to return them or sell them any time soon.. i hardly ever buy retail anymore though, so that's a moot point

I try to keep all my retail boxes.
I should take a pic later.. its sad.. most of my stuff comes OEM, and I have a ton of retail boxes.. 😱

LoL! I feel better already, I'm not alone 😀 I didn't even want to mention all the boxes (mostly for HTS and TVs etc.) I have stashed away in my parent's basement. Every time I come home they ask me "WTF!!! Can we throw those boxes out already???" Anytime I buy something big, I make a trip home with boxes lol.

I am the same way. The only boxes I haven't kept are the ones for my 32" and 57" Toshiba TVs. I think the wife would have killed me if I would have tried.

I usually throw them away a week or two after I get the item...to make sure it works and all that. The smaller boxes I keep longer than the bigger boxes.

I've still got the Dell 19" monitor box and Planar LCD box.

That's what I do... though I lose most of the manuals along with it most of the time. Thankfully websites nowadays for these products have downloadable PDF manuals.

Depends on what type of packaging it is. For all my major purchases (ie, stuff over $100) I usually keep the box for a while, anything under I throw away.

I keep packaging around until I'm confident the item isn't a lemon. Then it get thrown unless it's a hard drive because I know from experience these often go back while under warranty. I also keep monitor boxes "just in case".

I only throw mine away when I clean out the storage area in the house that is packed floor-to-ceiling with the things. I keep them for when/if I have to return them or if I ever go to sell the items. Every once in a while I will go through the piles of boxes and toss out the ones that belong to items I sold but did not need the box to ship them. I also keep the boxes that the OEM parts are shipped in so that I can reuse those boxes to ship out the stuff that I sell.

hehe, i still have boxes from my maxtor hard drives i bought 4 years ago. i guess its really time i should throw some these things out. 😱

I have most of my retail boxes still. I even keep most of the cardboard boxes I get off of buying stuff on the for sale forums and ebay. It's sad. 🙁 I try to throw them away, but I might need them to package something to sell.

I have my NES retail box from the late '80's still. 😀

hehe, I join in the gangs. Name a few: Diamond Riva TNT2 Ultra, SoundBlaster Live, Win98SE, Norton AV 2000, etc. in mint condition. It's hard for me to throw them out in that condition. Everytime I picked them up, I remembered the good time that I went bought it. Don't know what to do 😱

For the more major retail purchases I keep the box until the warranty expires or it's no longer in my possesion. Course that monitor box is good for storing books etc. in.

i keep some, i throw others away immediately. every once in a while i run out of space so i have to throw things away.

Yah I don't keep any blister packs or cheapo items, but I've recently (last 2 months) re-stocked my box collection with the following:

Dell 1900FP Flat LCD
Maxtor DMax 9 Ultra 8MB 80GB HDD
XBox Sega Bundle
Netgear 614 router
Motorola Surfboard 4200
Albatron GeForce4 Ti4200 Turbo
Audigy 2
MS Sidewinder FF 2
Bose HT Mid-sized satellites (replaced 2 dead Sonys)
Asus TV 880 PCI Tuner
5 or 6 PC games (MW4:Mercs, JK2, BF1942, few others I haven't even opened yet)

Not even counting the X-mas gifts........I need to start throwing stuff away.

I cull them when I need to, but I keep all retail boxes for products still under warranty, and all PC Game boxes in case I wanna trade or sell them. Older boxes it depends...for stuff that may be difficult to protect in case I need to move, like my old minidisc deck, it stays. Thankfully I have a pretty decent storage space 🙂
