I went in today and bought a socket 478 3ghz cpu in a retail box today for 175.00 to upgrade my pc. That was lower then I could find online.

They also had one marked 775? I am not familiar with that pin set socket?

not many people are Intel fans nowaday . . .

anyway to the OP . . . you bought a Northwood proc, right?[liquidater specs say 1MB Cache . . . i believe it's 512MB . . .the Prescotts have 1MB but run hotter] - O/C it! . . . you should easily get 3.2+Ghz at default voltage from it

The Prescott core also comes in s478 form as well as LGA775, so the specs that state 1MB of cache are most likely accurate. The Nothwoods haven't been manufactured in a long time, so just about any s478 P4 you find in a retail box nowadays is likely going to be a "E" series Prescott that not only won't OC worth a darn but will practically melt the MOSFETs on a lot of s478 boards that weren't designed to handle the Prescott's power requirements as well as the LGA775 boards.
