I just bought an Athlon XP 1700+ in the retail package. Is that "pink stuff" on the bottom of the heat sink heat transfer material or should it be removed? I left it on thinking it was heat transfer goop. My CPU is running a bit hot at 120 deg F and I was wondering if leaving this stuff on is causing that. I do have good air flow in my case.

Retail XP's come with a POS like this: http://www.coolermaster.com/products/cpucooler/socket/dp5-5g11.html

The pink stuff underneath it is a thermal pad. Basically wax. That and the fact that you are using the Coolermaster POS are contributing to your high temps. 120*F ~ 49*C. Is that your idle temp or full load temp? If it is your full load temp, then that is pretty decent, as my Alpha PAL8045 loads at 46*C. Idles around 38*C.

No, that's my normal (idle) temp. Guess I'm in the hunt for new heat sink - no wonder they call it a Cooler Master paper weight. Thanks for the info.

I'm curious about something. Everyone talks about the Alpha, and how the retail HSF sucks. I believe you, but did I just luck out, or is my case cooling that good? I have the retail HSF, kept the thermal pad on there, and I'm overclocked by 75 MHz...and I run about 48C at 100% load for hours, and 32C idle. Is this abnormally low for a retail HSF? (not that I'm complaining.) Is the thermistor fubar, or am I just lucky?
