Retail AMD Heatsink/Fan

Are the HS/Fans that come with the retail box AMD CPU's any good or should I also go w/ the OEM and buy an after market HS?

I do not know if I will OC or not. I do not know too much about it so if I do OC it will be something simple (no pushing the limits).

Get the retail since it has a 3yr warranty and the cooler is very good. If you overclock you void the warranty so take that into consideration, but if you choose to void it the stock cooler suffices for a good overclock as well.

Mine is working great. Keeps it around 38-39C when idling. Haven't really stressed it to max temps yet though.

I would prefer to use the one that came WITH your processor...unless you can find one with obnixious cooling capabilities....but that's not even necessary...even with overclocking. I think the manufacturers expect over 50% of home builders/home techers to OC....so it would be logical to say that they would consider that with their stock fan. Of course, none of the appearance factors with the stock heatsink/fan...but there's LOTS of other ways to beautify your builds than a CPU fan. You'd be surprised at the alternate fans out there that LOOK good to the eyes (eyecandy)...but are actually slower in RPM than the factory ones.

Yes, that's one of the stock heatsink/fan's that comes with the processor, and that's one I would suggest. Notice it's maximum RPM of 6000! When looking at aftermarket....it's lucky to find one that's 5000rpm....so point well made Dapunisher!

I find the stock fan on the retail Athlon64 socket 939 is quite LOUD.

Anyone concur?

Is there a good after market fan I could replace this one with, that will be just as effective but quieter?

You say 6000 RPM like it is a good thing. Simple RPMs don't tell the whole story, you also have to look at the size of the fans and how much dissipation area the heatsink has. Some of the Zalman HSF kits use 90mm or even 120mm fans, so they can push a pretty decent volume of air while staying well below 3000 RPMs.

Even if you're overclocking, you don't need high RPMs if you buy the right HSF. My AXP 2500+ is OC'd to 2.2GHz and my Aero 7 Lite is turned down to about 2400RPM. Even with that low speed, my processor rarely breaks 45C even under load on a hot summer day. The Zalman units can support decent A64 overlocks, even running pretty quiet. It'll cost you about $40 or so to upgrade from the retail HSF, but the reduced noise is worth every penny in my opinion.

My A64 3000+ 939 idles at 34C or less with Cool n' quiet on, and speedfan slowing down the fan to about 65% (~2000rpm). The stock fan goes almost silent (compared to the case/psu fan) at that speed. Course when actually doing stuff it'll speed up again, but then usually I have either games or music I'm listening to.

Ditto:

Same set-up, some solution

Yes, well Speedfan doesn't seem to work with the Chaintech VNF4/Ultra boards right now.

At least not that I've been able to get it to work. It freezes up my PC.

Anyone able to get Speedfan working with the Chaintech VNF4/Ultra?

Well the latest verison of SpeedFan now seems to work with the VNF4/Ultra.

Although I can't seem to get it to control the speed of the front fan (Plugged into System Fan connector on motherboard). It recognized the RPMs, however.

It does nicely control the speed of the CPU and Rear Case fan. Plugged into the CPU and Case Fan connectors respectively.

Anyone have any luck getting Speedfan to control the System Fan?
