Resurrecting an old Compaq Contura...need help!

My sister-in-law arrived today for a visit and announce that she has a "project" for me🙁
It's an old Compaq Contura 486 laptop that she would like to get working for her parents just for e-mail and word processing.
It has Win 3.1 on it and I would like to replace that with Win 95 and I think I have an old version of Word around somewhere.
Unfortunately it doesn't have a cd rom. Any ideas on how I can get it formatted and install the new os, etc.?

I know how to get 3.11 off 😉 as for getting the new files on there, the only thing I can think of (I'm assuming there are no usb ports or anything) is to get a laptop to ide converter and do it in a desktop.
