Wow. Those reviews are pretty harsh. For instance, Guantlet Legends is a blast! It only got a 4.whatever???? And I didn't even think Half-Life was ever released for the DC!

I've never heard of deSPIRIA, and it got a 10? What's that game about?

<< Now as I weed through them I'm trying to decide what to keep and what to return >>

cthd:
Obviously, don't keep any of the cancelled games ;)

Seriously, I've found Gamespot's reviews to be quite accurate as far as DC titles (which is not the case with some of their reviews for other platforms).

You could take a couple of approaches. Probably the best is to decide on a certain number, and return anything that was rated lower than that. A good score to start thinking about as a minimum cutoff is probably 6 ~ 6.5.

Personally, I wouldn't keep anything lower than a 6 at all, UNLESS there was some nostalgia thing for a game's subject matter. Even then, I might have to think about it, because a really BAD flaw (control issues, unbalanced gameplay, dead stupid or deadly unfair AI) makes for an unplayable game. And an unplayable game is dead weight in yoru collection.

I plan to keep the games which maximize my investment in DC controllers, like the VOOT Twin Stick, fishing rod, MC2, and arcade controller.
Also, I don't plan to keep any sports games, since I'm not into them.

As far as collecting items goes:
Official maracas and Samba de Amigo
Twin Stick and VOOT
Dance pad (not mat) and DDR
TXR2
Gundam Side Story
Marvel v. Capcom 2
HALF-LIFE??????? (this was never released, was it?)
Gundam Battle Online

As far as excellence:
Soul Calibur (the DC's killer app)
Jet Grind Radio (arguably, the 2nd killer app)
DOA2
F355
Marvel v. Capcom (both)
TDLM
aw heck, anything off the list below rated 8.5 or higher...

Just MHO

Thanks for the advice Tallgeese. I've learned that you have to take everything with a grain of salt and some things you have to find out for yourself if you're going to like.

Let's take the Flag to Flag CART racing for instance. I'm a massive race fan and a huge fan of CART, but I hate the DC CART game. I don't agree with gamespot's review for a couple of reasons. First off, he says that it's not bad (I think it's horrible) and secondly, he says that it's for CART fans. As much as it pains me, I may be dumping this game. I like looking at the graphics of the race cars, but that's about it.

As for some of these other games.. I have no idea if I'd even be remotely interested in a Marvel vs. Capcom, but I bought it anyway. Just by looking at the back of the jewel case, this game would've never interested me sitting on a rack somewhere. Pretty much the same thing goes with Soul Calibur, Skies of Arcadia, etc.. I only bought them because they came highly recommended. Not because I was interested in them for their face value.

As for sports games, I like sports games, so I will keep them. If you were merely keeping games based on their Gamespot rating, I'd say you'd have to keep yours. ;)

Now.. I really dig F355. It's an excellent game, especially after I started digging into it and opened up the additional race tracks. I can see myself spending a lot of time with that game. The thing that bugs me though is when I play it on my computer monitor, I get absolutely no sensation of speed. It feels like I'm going 30-50 mph by watching the road come up on you. Is this a function of the VGA box or is it that I'm finally seeing the game clearer on the CRT monitor than I ever could on my tv?

Don't want to write a book, so I'll stop now.. ;)

The Dreamcast might be the last console with great 2D fighting games. Many of the SNK and Capcom 2D arcade fighters were released for the DC. I doubt they'll be available on the Xbox or PS2 or whatever. I'm slowly finding out that in this overwhelmingly 3D console gaming world, the 2D fighting games can be a real blast. And the graphics and artwork are great! I think a lot of people warmed up to anime because of this genre. I might be warming up to it because I'm a fan of anime. Anway, be wure to check out all the Capcom and SNK fighters you can. I recently got King of Fighters '99 Evolution and I like it a lot. If you're looking for replayability, these games have it. Mastering all the moves of all the character could take years!

Salvador: F355 sure is one incredible game. Did you ever see the arcade version? The DC version is exactly the same. Perfect port. I read a while ago where a site quoted a pro Ferarri driver who said that he used F355 (the game) during the off season, and he was full of praise for it. Pity the poor soul who plays it expecting an arcade game though... :)

Also, Gran Turismo 2 through the Bleemcast emu works on any VGA box.

Anyone else with any experience using a lightgun and a VGA box? Anyone else tried it with the Naki box?

Ponderer: The driver that I heard used F355 in the off season was none other than Michael Schumacher. I'm sure that he's got the best of everything though including the best monitor or tv and the best possible wheel. Probably one of those $2k jobs that have the option to hook up to different types of game consoles and pc's.

I'm not saying that F355 is bad. I just noticed that for some reason when I'm playing the game on my CRT, it seems slower than normal. Is this a problem with the VGA connection. Has anyone else played F355 on their CRT and noticed this because it seems perfectly fine with my tv.

So.. Capcom vs SNK and Marvel vs. Capcom are 2d games then. If you can care less about Anime, would these games be a waste then?

I know you guys don't want to talk about this, but I think I'm going to get some "backups" of some of these games to try out and then decide what I want to keep. I have absolutely no problem with paying for games. I'd just rather keep the games sealed that I'm not sure about in case I want to sell them after I try the game.

I think of "backups" the way that I think about mp3's. If I like the music, I'll go out and buy the cd or the album. If I don't, I usually delete the music anyway. I think mp3's are a fantastic way to try music that you wouldn't have normally been able to listen to or what you'd probably wouldn't have taken a chance buying in fear that it would suck.

<< Thanks for the advice Tallgeese. >>

Don't ask my why, because I'm not really sure myself, but for some reason I thought Sal had posted the big list of games that was actually posted by cthd.
So, sorry Sal, wasn't trying to tell you what to do.
Still, my advice stands.

If there's one thing to keep in mind about the DC, there are some GREAT games in every genre for this particular platform.

Your mileage may vary on this one, but Outpost.com has Phantasy Star Online (v.1) listed for $9.90 but as a "check availability" status. Last time I ordered a couple of Netgear NICs with "check availability", they arrived about a week later than an in-stock item so if you don't mind the wait or even the possibility of it never arriving, this seems like good closeout pricing.

There are a few other $9.90 games but this one caught my eye.

edit: And this was a great thread idea, Tallgeese. That list is *awesome* and you've got my '10' rating. :)

Just got back from Circuit City and purchased VOOT for only $13.46!! Sticker on it still list it for $49.99. I was going to buy it anyway but what a sweet surprise. Still have one left.

Also I recently picked up a few extra copies of Skies of Arcida and wouldn't mind some trades. Can't think of what I need off hand but feel free to PM me what you have. Would like to only trade for new items. I have all sorts of systems.

Later!

I got you beat. I ordered a Jump pack close to launch. It was backordered. A year later I finally cancelled the order.

Salvador: Yea, it's obvious from your previous posts that you think F355 is awesome. I'm sure no-one misunderstood you. :) Same here.

It's fine on my monitor though. No problem with the sensation of speed. Helps if you keep your nose about 2 inches from the screen. Looks awesome! :)

I have tons of original Dreamcast games, but I've been burned once too often with crappy software to just jump on anything. If I can, I get an "evaluation version". If I like it, and in the case of the Dreamcast, can find it, I buy it. The nice side-effect of this is that I don't have to worry about my originals getting messed up, as my kids play with the DC stuff a lot, and a few scratched backups is way better than kissing the "impossible to replace" Dreamcast originals goodbye. :)

I'll say :Q
Cheap Outpost.com games posted to the list now.
Thanks tenchim!

FYI: Watch out, tho. MANY common titles that are less than $10 everywhere else, go for much more at Outpost.com
Example: Virtua Tennis = 29.95

Any good shooting games like bond for the DC? I don't currently have a light gun but compatibility might be good if I get one in the future. Mulitiplayer support so the guys can come over and I can whip em is also useful. I currently do have Unreal Tournament.

Thx

Tallgeese - Too bad about your experiences with Best Buy. So far they have been nothing but good for me. I was able to get 2 copies of Test Drive Le Mans off their website a couple of weeks ago, and more recently, I have a VMU sitting at the store waiting for me to pick up that only costed $5. Got to love them coupons. On a side note - dreamcast is dead for Bestbuy.com . Yesterday when I went to order my VMU, there was a link for the Dreamcast under video games. Today, there is no link. The only way to find anything now is to do a search for Dreamcast. When I searched, only video games and a controller showed up. Guess I just made it! It is very disappointing though to see a major retailer like BB wipe something off completely from their site.
One good thing from BB. They have Midway's Greatest Hits volume 1 for sale and in stock for 9.99. Not the best price, but given the unreliability of Sears, a very good alternative. I paid 19.99 yesterday for Ecco the Dolpin at my local Sears, they haven't marked down anything yet. It's the first I've seen the game in months aside from a used Blockbuster copy and I've been dying to play it. The game is amazing! For anyone considering buying it, I highly recommend. I only played it for about an hour, but the game is incredible, really.
Salvador, Circuit City did have the game on sale for 6.99 last week, I know because I picked up a copy. You could try buying a copy from Best Buy, I believe it is like 9.99, then return that copy to Circuit City for the price adjustment. I hope that makes sense - if not, disregard. My wife played the game for a while, pretty neat, but not my favorite. I'm not a big fan of 3D adventure games - I always manage to get lost on the boards. She liked it though, and the game is incredibly fast.
That is all, I think I've done enough typing for a while.

Oh, one more thing. I picked Conflict Zone for Dreamcast but have yet to open. I like the idea of it being a strategy game, but does anyone have any experience with the game. Any reviews would be much appreciated. Now I'm done. Long live this thread!

Hey all...saw a thread on FW that Toys-R-Us.com (aka Amazon.com) is having free shipping on all of their video games and accessories. Their prices are not all that hot, but some are equal to other places listed and it sure is convenient. Also, don't know if any of the amazon coupons still work, but that could save you a couple of dollars as well.

I was able to get the game "The Grinch" at Sears B+M today. The lady said all the DC games were 75% off,
but none of the prices reflected that. The Grinch was marked 39.99 but rang up as $9.99.
They had a quite a few games, but I have been looking for that one for my daughter....

On a related note, bought a copy of Re-Volt Racing used for 7.99 at Electronic Boutique.

Both of these were in Lafayette Sq. Mall, in Indianapolis.
