The MC2 does have built-in vibration, but rumble effects might be disabled in the game you are playing. Check the game's "Options" or "Setup" menu.

What can you use the broadband adapters for? someone please fill me in.
I know that it allows you to connect via cable/dsl, but doesn't sega charge to play online now (what is it $10/mo? $15/mo?)
also does it work with the sports series (NBA 2k2, or NFL2k2) I heard that it doesn't.
I tried to play on the seganet awhile ago (I tired NBA2k1- while it was still free) and the lags were unbearable.
I'd love to be able to use my dreamcast, so please tell me why it is still so popular to be selling for $100+

thanks

<< Thanks TallGeese. Looks like $100 is the going rate for broadband adapters. I will pass for now.

Congratulations on the new golden member ranking. If the courteous and helpful reply you gave me is any indication of the quality of your posts, you should be escalated to platinum.

I believe that certain tools used to rip copies of DC games can use the BBA to send the data out to a target location on a local network.
I cannot remember where I saw that, and I could be COMPLETELY wrong, but that would definitely explain the astronomical pricing.

hmm, little OT, but does anyone else think that Metropolis Street Racer is entirely too dark to see in the night levels?
I can't even tell where the track is! It's crazy!

Do you mean that I can use the Broadband Adapter to play the Sega Sports games? Can you please find the info on how I can do that, or what ever you can find to point me in the right direction to be able to research myself? A Dreamcast HAckers Bulletin Board?

BIG BUMP FOR ALL THOSE STILL LOOKING TO SCORE A DC CONSOLE

Check out the AMAZING price on a Dreamcast Sonic bundle someone found at Target.
Keep in mind, YMMV is the operative phrase here, but definitely too hot of a price not to post it!

Here's some info I thought you guys might be interested in. If I'm talking too much about warez for the mod's comfort, please tell me. I'm not trying to stir anything up. I won't say anything else if it bothers you.

First off, Babbage's seems to be a great place to find a Dreamcast. They got in 3 used ones in yesterday, all in excellent condition. They sell the console with all the wires and a controller for $59, and they pretest them. Not too shabby. Also, their 1 year warranty is $10 (it's worth it). They're also selling NEW sega brand controllers for $15, tons of games, and Mad Katz light guns (good ones) for $20.

Now for the "grey-area" stuff.

Dreamcast is the only console that has the ability to play backups (copies) of games OUT OF THE BOX. Not only that, but the maker of the CD-ROM unit in the Dreamcasts has published a letter saying that there IS a way to hack it, and if people find out how to do it, he will do nothing to stop them, and it's fine with him if people used hacked games. Of course by now, people know how to make the backups, and because of that letter, it is LEGAL to do it. At least that's MY understanding; I may have my head up my arse, too.

Anyways, you CANNOT burn from a dreamcast game - you can only burn from a copy of a game. This is because the DC uses high density disks that can hold up to 1 gig of info. Our burners can't read that kind of disk. So, a few people have been able to hook up their DC to their computer and use it like an external CD-ROM drive that CAN read those high-density games. Not easy to do, but it's doable. After they extract the games to their hard drives, they remove a couple unimportant files (like the sound to the intro movie), thereby reducing the size of the games down to 700 MB, where we can burn them onto a normal CD-ROM.

Sometimes they are self-bootable, meaning you just put the game in, and it starts up normal, just like any other game. Others require a Utopia Boot Disk. You put the boot disk in, it loads up, then asks for the game cd. Not too hard.

I'm not going to provide any links to outside sites, like warez or anything. That definitely wouldn't be appropriate in this forum. We all know the sites are out there where you can download software, but I'm not going to promote them. All I'm doing here is giving you guys some info on what the Dreamcast can do. Now you understand why it's so popular.

BTW, here's a reason NOT to burn games: They wear down the unit, causing yours to break earlier than normal. The copied games make the cdrom do more work, moving around more, etc. We're talking three years instead of 4 years of life, or something like that. It's something to think about.

<<...We're talking three years instead of 4 years of life, or something like that. It's something to think about.>>
Ok, in 3 or 4 years time, I don't think that I'd be playing DC. Probably PS2, 3 or whatever is out then. Let it be.

You have your head up your arse. Buying, selling and making backup games is copyright infringement. It doesn't matter whether the "maker" of the CD rom unit says it's fine with him, as he doesn't hold the copyright to the game.

Also, it doesn't matter whether the "maker" of the CD Rom unit says he won't stop people, as he's not in charge of enforcement.

If you want to make, buy, sell or trade backup DC games that's a personal decision, but don't try to rationalize it as legal, because it's not.

I think he just meant its legal to make a backup for yourself.

<< I think he just meant its legal to make a backup for yourself. >>

It's always legal to make a backup for yourself... And I will confirm what the poster above said about the GD-ROM making more movements for backed-up games because I have tried it... However I have not seen any info on this being harmful for the DC itself... If anyone has any links or info regarding that I'd like to see it...

Also, I've been looking for a Sega Brand 4x VMU forever... If anyone wants to sell one please PM me...

There is still stuff out there...

amazon.com lists 360 items in the DC summary... lots of games with "the usual" at the $10 price. Interestingly, they still show new DC consoles available at $50 and a couple of consold "bundles" at $70. They say "limited availability" and "usually ships in 1-2 business days" Who knows what your would hear if you ordered one!

bestbuys.com lists 69 DC games in stock, ranging in price from $5 to $40, with $10 and $20 being the most common price. Also, Sega brand controller for $15

kbtoys.com has lots of games, ranging in price from $10 to $50, with a dozen or so at $10 and a lot at $20.

walmart.com has come controllers and VMUs, and 75 games from $8 to $50, with most being TOO HIGH, compared to other sellers.

ebgames.com has a variety of hardware items and lots of games from $10 up. Some decent (albiet older) titles for the $10 price. They also sell used games.

Speaking of used games, half.com shows 370 game titles available, most under $20, many under $10, some as low as $4 plus shipping.

Ooh, good deal. There's also a $5 off $15 coupon for everyone floating around the other boards, at least I think so. I haven't tried to use it myself but if it's good, that's $5 off or at least discounted shipping.

Is there anywhere you can still buy the Dreamcast console? I went to two shopping malls, and checked EB, Target, Sears, Sam Goody, and I could not find anything. I can't find it on any websites too (with Amazon, you can only buy used ones in their marketplace, you can't buy any directly from Amazon now). Can anyone please tell me where I should look?

Hey guys,
Here is a site that I used to use to price DC games. I haven't checked to see if it is still kept up to date, but it used to be a great resource...
link

About a "backup" possibly wearing out a laser assembly pre-maturely is quite possible. If the laser assembly has to move more, it stands to reason that it will wear out quicker. How much quicker? Who knows.. I've noticed that some "backup" games don't seem to move the laser assembly that much at all. At least no more than the original game.

Case in point.. I have F355 as a backup and I have a store bought copy. I don't hear any difference in the console when I'm playing either copy. OTOH.. I have TXR2 in both backup and retail copy and the backup "works" the laser assembly quite a bit more than the retail copy.

With the DC games, I have heard that there is a program (can't remember the name) that puts all of the data towards the outside of the disc, so the laser assembly doesn't have to work as hard to read the disc.

I can see why the mods wouldn't want us talking about warez on their forums, but I don't see a problem with what I'm talking about here. The console and most of the games are already discontinued and I don't have any problem whatsoever with buying retail games. What I love about "backups" is the same thing I love about downloading mp3's. It gives me a chance to try out a game (or song) before I buy it. Also, having your "irreplaceable" Dreamcast game locked away while you're playing backups also adds to some peace of mind, especially when the kiddies are playing with the Dreamcast.

<< How many memory cards should one have? >>

Pick up one of those 4x memory cards at your local funcoland for 9 bucks or so. They have the same amount of space as 4 of the VMU's. (hence the 4x).

You should be set with one of those for a while. Cheaper than buying 4 VMU's, no LCD on the 4x, but the LCD didnt really do much for me anyways..
