I'm applying to be a retail representative for Cingular Wireless. I'm a high school senior right now, so I'm looking to work part-time. I've worked at a movie theater this past summer, and I've also worked at a couple of restauraunts for short amount of time, not to mention being a computer geek like most of us here . I'm not really sure what to put on a resume though - any good resume builders or advice? What chance do I have of getting this job? Whenever I go into one of the stores, there are always people waiting to be served - I would guess that they would need more people, but who knows?

ok well throw your experience out the window and start fresh because it sounds like you have very little retail experience which is what cingular will be looking for, so with little experience you need to have nice resume' and do well if you get an interview. Try using ms works for your resume, they have nice layouts on the resume' builder. Make sure to include and objective at the top, something like "to secure a position in which my education, training and hard work can be fully applied" anything general like that will catch an interviewers eye.
Make sure that your qualifications, education, and work experience are on the resume' and when and if you get an interview, avoid the phrase "i am a people person" which is a killer to people looking for salesmen. show good communications skills, being goal oriented, that you are computer literate etc. and good luck

Objective: Write here what you're going for and why. Always make your goals sound like they'll be to the employer's advantage.

Experience: Work experience if you have it; put the date you started and the date you terminated, the employer's name etc. Then put non-employed experience you've had doing the sort of thing you're applying to do. Make sure everything's clearly seperated into sections and easy to read.

References: Character references, experience references, etc.


Tips: Use bullets when you can, they make things easier to read. Don't play with fonts and stuff, use only bold, regular, and if you must, italic type but keep it all in one font. Make headings 11 or 12 pt font and the body 10 pt.

There's other stuff to go on a resume but if you're in high school that should do ya. I've worked as a technical recruiter and office admin for the last couple of years and one of my jobs as an admin was to reformat resumes to be readable. Oh yeah, one more thing. SPELL CHECK! There's nothing that reflects worse on you when you're trying to get a job than not taking the two seconds to spell check.

I do techinical interviews where I work as a sidebar to my real job. Since I'm not in HR I won't comment on the resume but I will help you out in the interview process.

First off, do your best to be calm and natural. Of course, be yourself and don't make stuff up to impress.

A good interviewer will ask open ended questions to get you to talk a lot. I try to minimize my talking to less than 10 minutes of a 30 minute interview. So be ready to explain in detail positive (and negative) experiences you have had in the workforce, school and personal life. Try to use actual experiences rather than theoretical what-ifs to explain things. The example of this used around here is what would you do if you got a flat tire? Theoretical answer: explain all the steps to change a flat tire. Real world: call AAA.

Also, in non-retail interviews, expect brain teaser questions. They shouldn't pop up in retail questions because they don't apply as much there.
